Bicycle tool test: If you are looking for high-quality bicycle tools, you will sooner or later come across the Topeak brand. The Topeak Prepbox contains a selection of 36 professional-quality tools in a sturdy carrying case. We took a closer look at the bicycle tool case for professionals and ambitious mechanics.

General information about the manufacturer

The global brand Topeak has been offering innovative equipment and tools for all areas of cycling for over 30 years. In addition to tools and pumps, the immensely wide range also includes bags, bottle holders, luggage racks and much more. The Koblenz-based Topeak provider RTI Sports has a total of eight premium brands under its roof, including its own brands Ergon and Terry.

Topeak Prepbox tool case: first impression

How innovative can a bicycle tool case be? Looking at the Topeak Prepbox we can only say: Very! The design and the stability of the case are just as convincing as the tight-closing closure. The interior is even more interesting. Padded and mesh covers fixed with a zip prevent the tool from falling out when the case is opened. But there shouldn't be any concern in this regard. The precisely milled foam inserts reliably hold the tools in place.

Processing and feel

The bicycle tools are presented at the same high level as the case. The processing and the quality deserve nothing less than the title top class. The same applies to the design, which ensures optimal handling of the individual tools. The tool lies perfectly in the hand and thus enables very precise use. The chain tool is as it should be and the versatile 1/2″ articulated handle combines great haptics with extremely brutal power transmission.

Which repairs are possible and can the tool convince in use?

The selection of tools is good and sufficient for most bike repairs, but still has gaps. We would like a chain lock pliers in the prep box as well as a chainring bolt counter holder or a cone wrench. However, the tool case comes with tools that you hardly or not at all find in the competition. These include a brush, a full set of torx wrenches and a torque wrench. Due to the design, the torque wrench unfortunately does not offer an automatic release, which means that a little sensitivity and a good eye are called for when tightening screws.

If we had to build our own bike repair toolbox, we would end up with something like the Topeak Prepbox. Both the tool quality and the design are absolutely top class. Unfortunately, tools such as chain lock pliers, a chainring bolt counterholder or cone wrench are missing.
