Professional-level bike tools: PRO Advanced Toolbox put to the test

23 December 2022 by Andrew Waldera

PRO Advanced Toolbox put to the test

Bicycle tool test: The PRO Advanced Toolbox with 25 tools is primarily aimed at experienced and advanced hobbyists. The voluminous dimensions of the case are striking, which can certainly be described as an XL version compared to conventional bicycle tool cases. Of course, this provides a lot of space: When opening, the viewer is presented with a very tidy picture.

General information about the manufacturer

The PRO brand from Shimano stands for high-quality and uncompromising bicycle components. Geared to different types of drivers, the range includes a large number of products in a wide variety of designs. In addition to components, the product portfolio also includes pumps and bicycle tools. The PRO products are distributed in Germany by Paul Lange & Co.

PRO Advanced Toolbox: First Impression

The fairly large and robust tool case has two metal latches that click into place when closed, thus ensuring safe transport of the tool. The 25 bicycle tools are reliably fixed in a foam insert in the bottom of the case. A thick foam insert is placed in the lid, which should allow an easy expansion of the toolbox. The individual tools are clearly and tidily arranged and are quickly at hand. The recessed grips make it easier to remove the tool.

Processing and feel

The tools impress with their high-quality workmanship at a professional level. This is followed by the rubberized handles, which allow a non-slip grip and score with a comfortable grip. A look at the spoke wrench shows that not all tools are the same. In contrast to most manufacturers, who rely on a universal tool, this case contains four individual spoke wrenches with different widths. The lighter weight and the special design ensure comfortable working.

Which repairs are possible and can the tool convince in use?

Thanks to the optimal design of the tools, work on the bike can be carried out quickly and efficiently. The selection is good, but has a few gaps. Although the set of Allen keys is quite extensive, the 1.5 mm key is missing. We would also wish for smaller Torx sizes, which you will look for in vain. However, there is a chain whip and a chain tool on board – both 12-speed compatible. The high-quality bicycle tool set is completed by a Bowden cable cutter and a chain lock tool.
