Top 10 Drivers 2022: 8th place – Mauro Schmid celebrates his first tour victory

24 November 2022 by Michael Behringer

Schmid

Cycling: Mauro Schmid is a man for top results. This is now also known in the Quick-Step team. In 2022, the Swiss even won his first tour - and that puts him in eighth place with us.

Schmid wins in Belgium

Last year Mauro Schmid won the breakthrough at the Giro d'Italia when he sensationally won a stage. This season he was particularly successful in Italy. A stage win at the Coppi e Bartali and second place in stage 19 at the Giro were his best results in the first half. But he was allowed to party properly in June in Belgium. Although he didn't win a section of the Tour of Belgium, he did win the overall ranking. In the jersey of the Belgian Equipe Quick-Step it was definitely a very special success. Likewise, by the way, like the world title in the mixed time trial at the end of the season.

A world-class all-rounder

Mauro Schmid also proved in 2022 that he is now one of the best all-rounders in the peloton. Any examples? In the final time trial of the Giro d'Italia he was sixth. The year before, he won his Giro stage on gravel and cobblestones. And that he can also sprint for the day's victory from a group, he has also proven several times. In Denmark at the latest, he proved that he can handle the wind well. Only in the high mountains does the soon-to-be 23-year-old not feel at home. But where does its development lead? Will we perhaps even see him as a classic hunter in the future? Quite possible in Team Quick-Step, even if the competition is strong here.
