Procraft tool case starter: Can the inexpensive and compact tool case from MCG convince in the test?

24 November 2022 by Andrew Waldera

Procraft tool case starter tested

Test tool case: With the tool case Starter, MCG's own brand Procraft offers a selection of tools for bicycle repairs. The content ranges from tire levers and patch kits to bottom bracket wrenches for internal and external gearing. The tool case is available for an attractive EUR 84,90. A real bargain or more of a nuisance in the long run?

General information about the manufacturer

The bicycle manufacturer MCG, based in Magstadt, Swabia, serves the bicycle accessories sector with its own Procraft brand. According to the company, in order to be able to meet the highest demands, only global suppliers and producers are considered. The brand relies on in-house testing machines to ensure the reliably high quality of the products. The quality concept is underlined by a 5-year guarantee on all products.

Procraft tool case starter: first impression

At first glance, the selection of tools seems well thought out and versatile. The build quality isn't professional, but it's okay for the price. The tools are clearly arranged and are held in place reliably and fairly tightly by the case inlet. Apparently there was no more room for the Torx key, the Allen key set and the small screwdriver - these roll around in separate empty compartments in an uncontrolled manner.

Processing and feel

The tools sit well in the hand and the sheathing, which is also used on the handle of the chain whip, allows for a firm and non-slip grip. The cone wrenches are kept thin according to the area of application and can be used from 13 to 16 mm thanks to the gradation. The chain riveter is not quite ideal for us, which does its job reliably, but does not convey confident handling. On the other hand, the 20 cm long tire levers, which peel even stubborn tires from the rim with ease, are a top solution.

Which repairs are possible and can the tool convince in use?

The selection is decent. Most of the normal bicycle repairs can be carried out with this set without any problems. It only gets annoying when Torx screws are installed on the bike. Except for the T25, there is no Torx key in the tool case. But there is - and this is not a matter of course - a chainring bolt holder. Bottom bracket wrenches for both internal gearing (Shimano Octalink, ISIS) and external gearing (Shimano Hollowtech II) have also been considered. Last but not least, the Procraft Starter tool case is rounded off by a patch kit.
