World Cycling Championships in Wollongong: Even the broken elbow doesn't stop Van Vleuten

September 24, 2022 by Michael Behringer

Van Vleuten Wollongong World Championship

Cycling: Annemiek van Vleuten has become road world champion for the second time after 2019. The Dutch won the women's race despite a broken elbow. She surprised her competitors with an attack in the last kilometer. This will see her wear the rainbow jersey in her final year as a pro. Zoe Backstedt from Great Britain triumphed again in the U23 class.

Van Vleuten World Cup Wollongong

Van Vleuten can't believe it

She has already won the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana this year. Now she crowns her incredible year with the world title: Annemiek van Vleuten is without a doubt the cyclist of the year. The Dutch won the gold medal after 164,3 kilometers in Wollongong ahead of the Belgian Lotte Kopeky and the Italian Sylvia Persico. And she managed to do that despite her broken elbow, which she sustained at the start of the mixed relay a few days ago. Since she couldn't sprint with this injury and couldn't keep up with the best on the mountain either, she had to surprise with an attack one kilometer from the finish - and she succeeded. In the climbs previously seemed Liana Lippert to be the strongest. The German tore up the field several times. But in the end she has to settle for fourth place.

Van Vleuten Backstedt

Backstedt celebrates a perfect birthday

While one is nearing the end of her career, the other is still at the very beginning: Zoe Backstedt was again crowned U18 Road World Champion on her 23th birthday in Wollongong. The Briton - daughter of the Paris-Roubaix winner Magnus Backstedt - achieved her sovereign victory with an impressive solo over 57 kilometers and thus defended her title from the previous year. After she already triumphed in the time trial, she makes hers with it Double world title perfect. Silver goes to the French Eglantine Rayer, Bronze to the Dutch woman Nienke Vinke.
