Cycling: Byron Munton was on yesterday's second stage of the Deutschland Tour for the German Continental team Dauner | Akkon active in the escape group. Things were looking good for the breakaway group until all hell broke loose in the peloton with 40 kilometers to go. The race got harder and harder and the former escapees were finally passed. In today's race diary, the 23-year-old South African time trial champion tells us how he experienced the race day from his perspective.

Byron Munton: “The goal was again the breakaway group”
Today we completed the second stage over 201 kilometers with a hilly landscape at the beginning and a flat middle section. Not too hard, but peppered with a few mountain ratings. The goal was to place our team in the breakaway group again and get a few more points in the intermediate rankings. Roman presented the colors of our team very well yesterday. We couldn't have started the Deutschland Tour better. This time I was in the escape group after a few kilometers. At first I was a bit hesitant because I was already thinking about tomorrow. But after a few minutes I thought maybe it's a good way to get through the first few hills and then ride in the decimated group to the finish, which would then catch us. Unfortunately, I was at the limit when the pursuers were able to catch up. The climb after that was too much.
"We put on a good show"
All in all I think we showed today as a team what we are capable of. We were able to present ourselves in the breakaway group on both days. For such a young team, we've put on a really good show so far. You can already tell that this race attracts much more attention than others. Especially with the younger drivers you can see that it means a lot to them. I think that brings out the best in them. I'm pretty excited myself, too, and I'm very excited to see what's in store for us over the next few days.
