Tour de France #5: Simon Clarke wins on Roglic debacle

July 6, 2022 by Michael Behringer

Clarke Tour de France

Cycling: The big winner of the fifth stage of the Tour de France is Simon Clarke. The Australian won the cycling spectacle to the forest of Arenberg as a breakaway ahead of Taco van der Hoorn. As almost expected, the strongest driver in the classification was Tadej Pogacar. His compatriot Primoz Roglic, on the other hand, lost a lot of time today.

Clarke wins Sprint of the Year

It was to be expected that Stage XNUMX of the Tour de France would be a spectacle, and we were not disappointed. But contrary to what was expected, the stage winner comes from the breakaway group and not from the main field. Six drivers broke away from the peloton shortly after the start. Participating again: Magnus Court (EF Education - EasyPost). The man in the mountain jersey had Neilson Powless (EF Education – EasyPost), Edvald Boasson Hagen (Total Energies), Taco Van der Hoorn (Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert), simon clarke (Israel – Premier Tech) and Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels – KTM) with you. The pace was always high in the peloton, but the pace dropped again and again due to various incidents. So the five remaining - the Frenchman Gougeard was distanced - were actually able to compete for the day's victory. Thanks to a spirited attack, it looked like Neilson Powless would be the happy winner in the last kilometer, but then his companions were able to catch up again and the sprint of the year began. First Boasson passed Hagen and opened a gap, then Van der Hoorn was in the lead. But in the end, Simon Clarke was jubilant.

Van Aert falls before the cobblestones

A worrying crash occurred before the first cobblestone section of today's 157km stage from Lille to Arenberg Forest. leader wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma) fell after an actually harmless right-hand bend and caught both his shoulder and his hip. He then drove together with his teammate Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo – Visma) between the vehicles back towards the peloton. When the motorcade suddenly came to a standstill, the Belgian almost collided with the DSM team car. Luckily, nothing else seems to have happened to the man in the yellow jersey, apart from a few abrasions. He was able to re-establish contact with the peloton and continue the stage as planned.

Disaster for Jumbo - Visma

We were able to name one of the unlucky ones 50 kilometers from the finish. Lost after a wheel change Ben O'Connor (Ag2r – Citroën) – fourth overall last year – caught up. Although the entire team supported the Australian, he lost several minutes today. A little later overtook jonas vingegaard (Jumbo – Visma) the same fate. Among other things, the Dane was wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma) in the yellow jersey but brought back into the peloton. For the Dutch team it should be even worse than it was Primois Roglic caught with a fall. The Slovenian was then to lose around two minutes, although of course he also had the help of his team-mates. Spicy: When Roglic fell, Vingegaard was still behind the field of drivers. Instead of calling the colleagues back to Roglic, they stayed with Vingegaard at first. Only later were they called back to the Slovenians.

Pogacar drives like a champion

One Slovenian's bad luck should be another's luck. While Primois Roglic lost a lot of time behind the group of favorites presented itself Tadej pogacar (UAE) once again in top shape. Last year's winner attacked together on a cobblestone passage Jasper stuyven (Trek – Segafredo). Together they were able to break out of the group of favorites, which was led by a strong team from Bora – hansgrohe. So drove Tadej pogacar a lead of 13 seconds - and the competitors can consider themselves lucky. It is also thanks to Wout van Aert that the deficit did not get any bigger. The man in yellow didn't just drive the last few kilometers for his team-mate Jonas Vingegaard, but also for himself. Finally, he defended his maillot jaune by 13 seconds Neilson Powless.
