Tour de France #2: Fabio Jakobsen celebrates victory in his first participation

July 2, 2022 by Michael Behringer

Jakobsen Tour de France

Cycling: Fabio Jakobsen has won the second stage of the Tour de France, giving his team Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl a second win in a row. The Dutchman won the hard-fought bunch sprint ahead of Belgium's Wout van Aert, who takes the yellow jersey.

Jakobsen intercepts van Aert

The second stage of the Tour de France begins Fabio Jacobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl). After 202,2 kilometers from Roskilde to Nyborg, the Dutchman was ahead of the Belgian in a bunch sprint wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma) and the Dane Mads pedersen (Trek – Segafredo) prevail. Due to the time bonus, Wout van Aert takes over the yellow jersey from his compatriot Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl), who played a key role in helping his teammate Fabio Jakobsen to win. Previously was in the person of Sven Eric Bystrom (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert Matériaux) caught up with the last escapee and crossed the nearly 18-kilometer-long bridge that leads across the Great Belt. There were numerous falls. Throughout the day, in good weather, many enthusiastic people could be seen on the side of the road. They cheered their idols with waving flags.

Falls before, on and after the bridge

It was to be expected that there would be falls on the first stages of the Tour de France – almost a tradition. Luckily, the peloton was spared a fall fiasco until shortly before the approach to the bridge. Only when there was a rush because of the approach to the bridge did the first pros fall to the ground. This is how it got, among other things, for the classification driver Rigoberto Urán (EF Education – EasyPost) and the overall leaders Yves Lampaert (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl). However, the Belgian was able to catch up - thanks to the support of his Danish team-mates Michael Morkov and Mikel Honore. The Colombian didn't lose any time today either, as the wind on the bridge was kind to the pros and neither team dared to attack. Above all Alberto Bettiol and Stephen Bissegger made sure with their work that Uran didn't lose a lot of time again after yesterday's time trial. The biggest crash happened 2,2km from the finish line and luckily it was within the 3km mark so the pros who fell didn't lose any time.

Magnus Cort conquers the mountain jersey

In addition to the stage win and the yellow jersey, the mountain jersey was of course also at stake today. It was therefore quite surprising that the breakaway group was there with the first attack and that all teams in the main field were satisfied with that. The Dane Magnus Court (EF Education – EasyPost), the Norwegian Sven Eric Bystrom (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert Matériaux) and the two French Pierre Roland (B&B Hotels – KTM) and Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels - KTM) weren't left far behind, however, before teams BikeExchange - Jayco and Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl got in the chase. After 62 kilometers the first mountain prize was on the agenda. At the Côte d'Asnæs Indelukke, the two French teammates tried to take advantage of their superior numbers. However, this went so badly wrong that they not only lost the sprint for the mountain points, but also the connection to their two former companions. Magnus Cort won the first sprint and then also sovereign on the Côte d'Høve Stræde and the Côte de Kårup Strandbakke. With three points under his belt, the Dane was able to celebrate in front of his home crowd.

Only Ewan, Sagan & Van Aert Want Green?

After the three climbs, the two French fell back into the peloton. The intermediate sprint was then prepared there, so that the lead of the Norwegian-Danish duo fell to less than a minute. Secured behind the two breakaways Caleb ewan (Lotto Soudal) the highest score wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma) and Peter Sagan (Total Energies). Behind them, there was only sporadic sprinting for points. It was rolled over the line rather comfortably, which means that we can already delete numerous drivers from the list of candidates for the green jersey. Neither Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Deceuninck), nor his teammate Jasper Phillipsen (Alpecin – Deceuninck) had the least interest in the intermediate sprint. Also Dylan Groenewegen (BikeExchange – Jayco) and Michael Matthews (BikeExchange – Jayco) did not participate.
