Tour de France #15: Philipsen sprints to stage win in Carcassonne

July 17, 2022 by Michael Behringer

Cycling: Jasper Philipsen has his stage win. The Belgian won stage 15 in Carcassonne in a bunch sprint ahead of Wout van Aert and Mads Pedersen. The last breakaway was caught only 500 meters from the finish line. The day was bitter for Jumbo – Visma. Primoz Roglic could not compete due to his injuries. Steven Kruijswijk retired after a fall during the stage.

Philipsen rewards himself and his team

Celebrate at unbelievably high temperatures – sometimes up to 40° Celsius Jasper Phillipsen (Alpecin – Deceuninck) won his stage in the Tour de France. The Belgian was able to just ahead of his compatriot in the mass sprint wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma) and the Dane Mads pedersen (Trek – Segafredo) – both of whom have already won a stage at this year's Tour of France – prevail. Before that, his Alpecin – Deceuninck team was working hard to catch up with the escapees. Finally, in person Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) the last remaining fugitive only 500 meters from the finish line. The French are still waiting for their first win of the day. Most recently, they were unsuccessful at the 1999 Tour de France.

No chance for the escapees

The three outliers of the day – wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma), Nils Politt (Bora – hansgrohe) and Mikkel Honore (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) – had no chance of a successful escape on the 202,5-kilometer stretch from Rodez to Carcassonne. The BikeExchange – Jayco and Alpecin – Deceuninck teams in particular were involved in the follow-up work. After being caught around 53 kilometers from the finish, the German first broke away Jonas slip (EF Education – EasyPost) as a soloist. Subsequently, the French could Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) and Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels - KTM) with a few seconds as a duo. But on the Côte des Cammazes and the kilometers that followed, the Trek – Segafredo, Bora – hansgrohe and DSM teams kept up the pace in the peloton to outpace the fast sprinters. Even the breakaways couldn't pull away far enough. It got tight in the end though.

Jumbo – Visma with bad luck

Three riders did not compete in today's 15th stage of the Tour de France. The Slovenian Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) continues to suffer from injuries sustained in the fall. The Australian simon clarke (Israel – Premier Tech) and the Dane Magnus Court (EF Education – EasyPost) have submitted a positive corona test. As a result, they were no longer allowed to tackle the 202,5-kilometer stage from Rodez to Carcassonne. Unfortunately, numerous falls occurred during the race – and the team Jumbo – Visma got hit several times. So crashed Steven Kruijswijk and probably injured his collarbone. The Dutchman had to retire from the race. A little later Leader came too jonas vingegaard coincidence. Fortunately, the Dane can continue the Tour de France.
