Cycling: Daryl Impey has ended his dry spell of almost three years and has finally been able to win a WorldTour race again. The South African won the fourth stage of the Tour de Suisse in a sprint out of a decimated peloton.
Impey wins ahead of Matthews
Although the profile of the fourth stage of the Tour de Suisse was mostly flat, after 190,8 kilometers only a small peloton should sprint for the day's victory in Brunnen. The runaway trio around Matthew Holmes (Lotto – Soudal), Markus Hoelgaard (Trek – Segafredo) and Jimmy Janssens (Alpecin – Fenix) was caught before the decisive phase started on the last hill. Marc Hirschi (UAE) continued his attack over the crest, but the Swiss couldn't break away either. So it came to the decision in the sprint, in which Daryl Impey (Isarel – Premier Tech) was just ahead. Michael Matthews (BikeExchange – Jayco) – with whom he rode on the same team for four years – was beaten by just inches. Daryl Impey is finally celebrating a victory in the WorldTour after almost three years. Most recently, he celebrated when he won a stage of the Tour de France in Brioude.
Bettiol wants to know
Disappointed with the outcome of the stage should above all Alberto Bettiol (EF Education First – EasyPost). After his mishap on the second stage, he rightly wanted to stretch his arms in the air today. On Monday, he celebrated his stage win too soon before realizing that someone had already crossed the finish line in front of him. Despite the strong preparation of his teammates, he shouldn't be able to win the day today either. Behind Soren Kragh Andersen (DSM) he only sprinted to fourth place. Rolled over the line in 29th place Stephen Williams (Bahrain-Victorious). The Brit was left behind on the last climb, but fought his way back into the peloton. That leaves him in the yellow jersey – six seconds ahead Andrew Kron (Lotto – Soudal).
