Giro d'Italia #9: Hindley wins ahead of Bardet & Carapaz

15 May 2022 by Michael Behringer

Hindley Giro d'Italia log cabin

Cycling: great success for the German racing team Bora – hansgrohe. Jai Hindley has won the ninth stage of the Giro d'Italia on the blockhouse. Juan Pedro Lopez continues to lead the overall standings.

Hindley Giro d'Italia

Hindley climbs to stage win

Jay Hindley (Bora – hansgrohe) has prevailed on the log cabin. The Australian won Sunday's mountain stage in an uphill sprint from the group of favorites. In the last meters he left the French Romain Bardet (Ag2r – Citröen) and the Ecuadorians Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) just behind. Behind also crossed Mikel Landa (Bahrain – Victorious) and Joao almeida (UAE) crossed the finish line at the same time. Dominic Pozzo alive (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert Matériaux) and Emmanuel Buchman (Bora – hansgrohe) lost only 3 or 16 seconds to the winner of the day.

fight for pink

A little further back it was about the pink jersey. The Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez placeholder image (Trek – Segafredo) initially fought an exciting duel against Lennard Kamna (Bora – hansgrohe). But the German couldn't keep up at the end of the final climb and lost a lot of time - and with it all chances for the pink jersey. That's how it went for Lopez in a long-distance duel against the top drivers, who were also fighting for the day's victory at the very front. And the Spaniard was finally able to hold his own at the front. He is now 12 seconds ahead of the Portuguese in the overall standings Joao almeida (UAE). Emmanuel Buchman (Bora – hansgrohe) is ninth, 1:09 behind.

Yates with knee problems

Completely from the fight for Rosa has said goodbye Simon yates (Bike Exchange - Jayco). The Brit, who won the time trial on the second stage and was then considered the top favorite for overall victory, is suffering from severe knee pain. His complaints got so bad during the stage that he was no longer to be seen in the decisive phase.

¡Jai Hindley is impressive in the blockhouse! El australiano fue el más rapido al esprint tras una subida en la que Bardet, Landa y Carapaz marcaron la pauta. Mucha igualdad en este #Turn.
