Giro d'Italia #19: Bouwman wins and secures the mountain jersey

27 May 2022 by Michael Behringer

Bouwman Giro d'italia

Cycling: Koen Bouwman scored a double at the Giro d'Italia today. The Dutchman not only won the 19th stage, but also the mountain jersey. In the overall standings, Jai Hindley and Richard Carapaz remain almost level.

Bouwman wins stage & mountain jersey

Again, a runaway celebrates the stage victory at the Giro d'Italia. On the 178-kilometer section from Marano Lagunare to the Santuario di Castelmonte, twelve breakaways, including the Swiss, broke away from the peloton early on Mauro Schmid (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) and the Austrian Tobias Bayer (Alpecin-Fenix). As the group approached the Kolovrat mountains classification on Slovenian soil, it fell apart. The five remaining professionals fought up the final climb. However, they could not really distance themselves up to the last few meters. So it came to the all-important uphill sprint, in which finally Koen Bouwmann (Jumbo – Visma) was able to prevail. The Dutchman can not only be happy because of the stage victory. On the way to the finish, he also collected points in the mountain classifications and thus secured the mountain jersey.

Carapaz and Hindley tied

In the overall standings, there was no further selection or even a preliminary decision today. The two strongest riders in this Giro d'Italia couldn't take any time again. Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) tried several times, Jay Hindley (Bora – hansgrohe) to shake off, but he didn't succeed. Also Mikel Landa (Bahrain – Victorious) stayed close to the two. So tomorrow there will be the grand finale in the mountains, before the time trial decides on Sunday.

Richie Porte has to give up

Loses two days before the end of the Giro d'Italia Richard Carapaz an important helper. The Australian Richie porte (Ineos Grenadiers) couldn't finish today's stage. Due to an illness he felt too weak to overcome the steep and long mountain passes. On the days before, however, he presented himself in good shape and was always a great help to his captain, especially uphill. Wasn't even able to start today's stage Jefferson Cepeda (Drone Hopper – Androni Giocattoli). He also suffers from a cold.
