Previously, he was able to take it easy in the slipstream, since he is the only one in the top group who no longer has any ambitions in the overall ranking. Unlike in his earlier years, he remained patient. Nobody was able to follow his attack on the last climb of the day. But even before that, the stage was memorable.

When Bora – hansgrohe increased the pace, the peloton was torn apart early on and the favorites were among themselves. leader Juan Pedro Lopez placeholder image (Trek – Segafredo) resisted losing his pink jersey for a long time, but then had to realize in the last few kilometers that he couldn't keep up with the best climbers in the world. The new driver in pink is called Richard Carpaz (Ineos Grenadiers). The man from Ecuador launched his attack 30 kilometers from the finish. However, this came too soon. Because a few kilometers later could Jay Hindley (Bora – hansgrohe), Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) and that one Simon yates unlock again.

Since one with Lennard Kamna such a high speed, the field split up into several groups. In the meantime there were only seven men in the peloton - including five from the German racing team.
