Ortlieb Vario PS: New: The two in one bag for commuters

11 April 2022 by the editorial office

The German manufacturer Ortlieb presents the new Vario PS bag, which can be converted from a backpack to a bike bag in a matter of seconds. You can find all information here.

In 1982, Hartmut Ortlieb founded what is probably one of the most successful brands in the areas of discovery, travel and cycling. Important for Ortlieb was and is the constant further development of the products, new standards and sustainability.

With the Vario PS, a new product is now being presented that has more than just one area of application. Good for the versatile, for the undecided and for all-rounders...

Ortlieb Vario PS – backpack or saddle bag?

You no longer have to ask yourself this question with the Vario PS. The clever design allows the bag to be converted in just a few movements. While the well-known Ortlieb Quick System for attaching to luggage carriers is located on one side, a padded carrying system with a chest strap is attached to the opposite side of the bag. With the help of the so-called flap, the bag can be changed quickly. This has an integrated pocket and can be attached with hooks.

Storage space

The most important thing about a bag is of course the space. What use are great features if the storage space is too small for everyday use?! The Vario PS is approx. 47 cm high, 31 cm wide, 22 cm deep and has a volume of 26 liters.

There is a small, integrated compartment with a zip on the flap. Small parts such as tools or the like can be stowed here. The main compartment has a padded compartment for the laptop, storage space for shopping, clothes or everyday items and a small pocket for valuables.

The main compartment can be easily closed and opened watertight with the tried-and-tested roll closure.

For safety on the road, the Vario bag has reflectors and reflective yarn on the outside. Incidentally, according to Ortlieb, the waterproof hybrid is PVC-free and sustainably manufactured in Germany.

variants and prices

The Vario PS made available to us came in a striking petrol color. If you like, you can choose from three other colors - lemon sorbet, rooibos and black.

Of course, "made in germany" and sustainable production are not available at dumping prices. The Ortlieb Vario PS is for EUR 169,99 available. That's ok, because in our experience the Ortlieb parts last really long, are really waterproof and there is even a repair service...

Ortlieb Vario PS – Our first impression

The Vario PS does exactly what it should. We have enough storage space for everyday life, can use it for work and quickly swap between backpack and saddlebag. In addition, the comfort does not have to suffer from the feature and the Vario sits comfortably on the body even with heavier contents. Everything done right!
