Driving technique video series : Better cornering on the E-MTB

29 April 2022 by the editorial office

E-MTB riding technique: Every Friday, our video series on the topic of riding technique on mountain bikes with and without an electric drive illuminates all relevant topics for safe descent. We already have those home position, the balance and that safe brakes shown. This week we are specifically dedicated to the topic: Riding curves on the E-MTB.

"It's Friday again" - and on Riding Techniques Friday this week we'll be dedicating ourselves to better cornering when mountain biking. Driving around curves with the MTB but also E-MTB can be a huge fun factor. Of course, as always, the right driving technique is important. In this video we want to show you how you can safely take better and more energy-saving turns.

4. Riding technique video: Better cornering on the E-MTB

When cornering on the E-MTB, there are three elementary points to consider: arm work, directing your gaze and choosing the optimal driving line.

arm work

The arms must be bent when entering the curve, as this is the only way to stretch the arm on the inside of the curve and to lean the bike into the curve. Due to this relevant leaning of the bike, the radius of the curve becomes narrower. On the other hand, the longer side lugs of the tires can become active and the body mass has a better and more direct effect on the wheels. In addition, the leg on the inside of the curve can make contact with the saddle or the top tube, which increases stability.

line choice

When choosing a line for clear routes, the principle applies: outside – inside – outside. In poor external conditions and unknown and confusing routes, the driving style must be adapted to the trail. In any case, a large radius is good; this reduces the steering angle. This is a prerequisite for more speed - or to put it another way: the more you steer, the more you have to brake.

Eye guidance

Looking in the direction of travel is important in order to be able to assess how sharply a curve is turning and what the nature of the ground is like. At the beginning of the curve, your gaze wanders along the imaginary ideal line to the end of the curve. Thus, the curve radius and the surface are checked and you can adjust your speed. These three points lead to a reduction in the steering angle. Basically, only give in as much as is really necessary!

Stefan Hermann, from the MTB Academy recommends:

"Driving flow - joy - flow is mainly generated by the momentum in the corner exit. If you implement the tips, you will no longer have to downshift and pedal out of the corner"
