Cycling: So Primoz Roglic is vulnerable after all. The Slovenian, who has been so sovereign up to now, can celebrate the overall victory in Paris – Nice, but had to admit defeat to Simon Yates today. With a courageous solo, the Briton ensured an exciting final stage and visible weaknesses in the man in the yellow jersey. But he could rely on his noble helper Wout van Aert.
Simon Yates gets Primoz Roglic in trouble
Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) has won the 80th edition of Paris – Nice. The Slovene defended his yellow jersey on the last stage, which started and ended in Nice over 115,6 kilometers and almost had a surprise in store for the spectators. Then Simon yates (BikeExchange – Jayco) made life as difficult as possible for the leader. The Briton attacked on the last climb and caused a lot of trouble for Primoz Roglic. The gap opened up - not just between Yates and the man in yellow, but between them wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma) and his team captain. While the Belgian tried to keep the gap within limits, his captain Primoz Roglic kept losing the noble helper's rear wheel.
The green secures the yellow for the yellow
Arriving at the last summit, the gap between Yates and Roglic/Van Aert was just over 20 seconds. The Jumbo – Visma duo shook off all companions in pursuit of the leader. Only Nairo Quintana (Arkéa – Samsic) was able to hold the rear wheel at least until just before the crest. Downhill and in the final flat section could be wout van aert and Primois Roglic take no more time. That's how the day's victory starts Simon Yachts, but overall victory remains in the hands of the Dutch team – thanks to noble helper Wout van Aert.
