Trophy Playa de Palma: Rookie Arnaud de Lie surprises the sprinters

30 January 2022 by Michael Behringer

Arnaud de Lie Palma Mallorca Challenge

Cycling: Arnaud de Lie surprisingly won the Trofeo Playa de Palma. In the last race of the Mallorca Challenge, the only 19-year-old Belgian prevailed in front of Juan Molano (UAE).

Arnaud de Lie celebrates his third race

All good things come in threes. This saying at the start of the cycling year 2022 definitely applies to Arnaud de Lie (Lotto – Soudal). Because the Belgian recently signed a contract for this season and next – his first with a professional team. At the Mallorca Challenge, the only 19-year-old Belgian should now show that he can keep up with the pros - and he can! He was already in the squad for the Trofeo Alcudia and the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana, but was not supported as captain. However, on the final day of the Mallorca Challenge, the team drove for him in a bunch sprint. With success, because Arnaud de Lie raced across the finish line in front of Juan Molano (UAE), eight years his senior, who got his sprint pulled by German Pascal Ackermann (UAE). With this, neo-pro de Lie celebrates an impressive win within the first few days as a pro.

Arnaud de Lie:
“First victory among the pros – and that in the third race. I feel great. It's an incredible feeling. Ackermann put on the sprint for Molano, so I followed behind. I just pulled through the last meters.”
