World Cycle Cross Championships: Vos wins the fight of the Dutch women

Vos Brand World Cycling Championships

Cycling: Marianne Vos won the world championship title in cyclocross. In Fayettenville, the Dutchwoman relegated her compatriot Lucinda Brand to second place. Briton Zoë Backstedt was crowned junior champion. World Champion in the U23 class was Joran Wyseure from Belgium.

Vos wins the duel in the Netherlands

It was clear early on in the race: the Dutch women will live up to their role as favourites. Eventually, Marianne Vos and Lucinda Brand broke away from their opponents and were due to duel for the world title to the finish line. Since neither of the two managed to lose their companion, the decisive final sprint came after seven laps. Marianne Vos finally came out on top there. Somewhat surprisingly, Italy's Silvia Persico secured bronze. The German Elisabeth Brandau was twelfth.

Wyseure is crowned U23 World Champion

Joran Wyseure became world champion in the U23 class. The Belgian relegated his compatriots Emiel Verstrynge and Thibau Nys to second and third place. He did this with an impressive attack when he drove ahead of everyone on the second lap. Strong twelfth place was Dario Lillo from Switzerland. Pascal Thömke was the best German to drive in 33rd place.

Joran Wyseur:
“I wanted to go full throttle on the climb and see what happens. I had a few meters and then I wanted to go at my own pace for the whole race.”

3. Thibau Nys (Belgium) +0:33
4. Mees Hendrikx (Netherlands) st

Backstedt becomes double world champion

Zoë Backstedt made history with her title at the Junior World Championships in Fayettenville. The Brit is crowned double world champion. A few months ago, the 17-year-old already won the world championship on the road. Leonie Bentveld and Lauren Molengraaf of the Netherlands had to settle for silver and bronze in the USA after the new title holder completed an impressive solo.



Zoe Backstedt:
"I gave it my all. Teammates were standing at the top shouting that I had a ten second lead. So I went all out.”
