Cyclecross European Championship: Lars van der Haar leaves 6 Belgians behind

7 November 2021 by Michael Behringer

Lars van der Haar European Cycling Cross Championships

Cycling: Lars van der Haar is the new European champion in cyclocross. The Dutchman left six Belgians behind in Wijster. He is crowned European champion for the second time since 2015. World champion Lucinda Brand managed to win the European title in the women's category.

Van der Haar takes advantage of the top stars' absence

What is a European title in cyclocross worth if the best riders aren't there? Some fans and journalists may be asking themselves this question at the moment, but in a few years – as the saying goes – no one will care anymore. That's exactly what will happen Lars van der Haar think. After 2015, the Dutchman triumphed again at a European cyclocross championship in Wijster. And he acted extremely confidently. Quinten Hermans and Michael Vanthourenhout he left 25 and 54 seconds behind. In total, he defeated six Belgians in one go. Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel and Tom Pidcock did not start.

Brand flexes her muscles

world champion Lucinda Brand has now also secured the title at the European Championships after the World Cup crown. The Dutchwoman, who had been left behind more often recently, was completely her old self again this time. Kata Blanka Vas from Hungary and Yara Kastelijn of the Netherlands, 56 and 62 seconds back respectively, didn't stand a chance. The only German starter was Elizabeth Brandau, who finished the race in 18th place.
