Cycling: The new European road champion is called Sonny Colbrelli. The Italian defeated a strong Remco Evenepoel from Belgium today in a two-man sprint. Bronze goes to France's Benoit Cosnefroy.
Colbrelli just can't be shaken off
Sonny Colbrelli is European Champion! The Italian was able to secure an extremely exciting race ahead of the Belgian Remco Evenepoel push through. On the 179,2 kilometers with start and finish in Trento, the spectators were treated to action right from the start at a total of 3.400 meters in altitude. Numerous attacks quickly ensured that the field was decimated and most riders even had to get off their bikes. Especially a lot worked for his captain Victor Campenaerts from Belgium. Remco Evenepoel initiated the final with his attack, which only Sonny Colbrelli and Benoit Cosnefroy could follow. When the latter had to give up a few kilometers before the finish, it was clear that the two would fight for victory. While the Belgian rode almost everything from the front – and was arguably the truly strongest rider in the peloton – the Italian struggled to keep the rear wheel. In the two-man sprint for gold, he was then able to show off his sprint qualities perfectly. The Swiss should also be satisfied with his performance after a mixed season overall Marc Hirschi, who finally crossed the finish line in sixth place.

With the Belgian Thibau Nys the son of a former professional cyclist won the title in the U23 class. His father - Sven Nys - was particularly successful in cyclocross. Thibau Nys is also mainly active there, but after winning the European Championship in Trento he could now switch to the streets. Silver goes to the Italian Filippo Baroncini before the Spaniard Juan Ayuso. The Austrian Tobias Bayer finished tenth. Best German was Michael Hessman in 20th place.

The two Germans Emil Herzog and Moritz Karsten finished 12th and 13th.
