Tour de France #14: Bauke Mollema cheers in Quillan

July 10, 2021 by Michael Behringer

Mollema Bauke Tour de France

Cycling: Bauke Mollema secured the day's victory as a breakaway on the 14th stage of the Tour de France. The Dutchman won in Quillan ahead of Austrian Patrick Konrad.

Mollema wins after a strong solo

Again, the breakaways prevailed in the Tour de France. This time, however, they had to fight for their participation in the escape group of the day. In the end it was worth it. Because the peloton - led by UAE - let the group get through. The Dutchman was the beaming winner of the day Build Mollema (Trek – Segafredo), who completed a 40 km solo. Behind him the Austrian sprinted Patrick Conrad (Bora – hansgrohe) in front of the Colombian Sergio Higuita (EF – Nippo) to second place in the daily standings. New second in the overall standings William Martin (Cofidis). The Frenchman climbed well up in the overall classification as a breakaway. In the main field, however, there was a truce.

14 men form late breakaway group

It took more than two hours for the group of the day to form on today's 183,7 kilometer stage from Carcassonne to Quillan. Five riders were able to break away from the peloton, but behind them attack after attack rained down every minute. The first breakaway group of the day was caught again, before the breakaway group of the day only formed around 100 kilometers from the finish line. Michael Woods (Israel Start Up Nation), Wout poels (Bahrain-Victorious), Mattia Cattaneo (Deceuninck – Quick Step), Stephen Chaves (BikeExchange), Sergio Higuita (EF-Nippo), Omar friar (Astana-Premier Tech), Build Mollema (Trek - Segafredo), louis meintjes (Intermarche – Wanty – Gobert) William Martin (Cofidis) and the Austrian Patrick Conrad (Bora – hansgrohe) came together at the front of the race. A little later, the four French were able to Valentin Madouas (Groupama – FDJ), Elie Gesbert (Arkea – Samsic), Pierre Roland (B&B hotels) and Quentin Pacher (B&B Hotels) unlock.

Mollema, Woods & Martin have reason to celebrate

As is so often the case, the spectators were treated to several races in one. So dueled Michael Woods and Wout poels in the mountain classification and William Martin mainly drove speed to improve the overall standings. No attention was paid to these ratings Build Mollema. The Dutchman concentrated fully on the stage hunt - and was rewarded for it. At the end of a descent, still more than 40 kilometers from the finish line, he successfully launched his attack. Behind them there was disagreement and Bauke Mollema drove - typical for him - in his suffering manner in the direction of the day's victory. Michael Woods can also be happy, who won the mountain points duel against Wout Poels and can therefore start tomorrow in a mountain jersey. And Guillaume Martin is now second in the overall standings, so he can also be very happy with his performance today.
