Carapaz wins gold in Tokyo

Gold for Ecuador. For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, a rider from Ecuador has secured a medal in the road race. Richard Carapaz - Tour third - left all his companions behind after the descent and then couldn't catch up. Behind it all tried Wout van Aert, not to let the backlog get too big. The Belgian found little support. In the end, the multiple tour stage winner was rewarded with the silver medal ahead of the tour winner Tadej pogacar from Slovenia. Germany's hope Maximilian schachmann unfortunately had to give up a few kilometers before the finish line and still finished in a respectable tenth place.

Pogacar attacks, van Aert stays tuned

At the beginning of the 234-kilometer race, which started in Musashinonomori Park and finished at Fuji International Speedway, eight pros were able to break away. Four of them held the lead over 100 kilometers and were awarded a lead of almost 20 minutes, including them Yuraj Sagan (Slovakia). However, when the Belgians, Italians and Slovenes increased the pace, the fugitives were caught before the start of the Mikuni Pass. Then it ignited there Tiesj Benoot (Belgium) the Turbo, so that the group shrank to less than 30 men. 38 kilometers before the finish then sat Tadej pogacar (Slovenia) his first attack. Only him could Brandon McNulty (US) and Michael Woods (Canada) to follow. Behind left the pursuers wout van aert (Belgium) the management work. Shortly before the summit, he was able to reestablish contact with some of his companions.

Van Aert sprints to silver ahead of Pogacar

After the descent, the duo broke up Richard Carapaz (Ecuador) and Brandon McNulty (UNITED STATES). Their former companions looked at each other, so the lead quickly grew to over 40 seconds. Only when wout van aert (Belgium) forced to follow, the gap fell to 15 seconds. However, because the Belgian then took it out again, the leading duo pulled away again. A few kilometers before the finish, Carapaz left his competitor standing on a small hill. McNulty was promptly caught by the chasing group. The German Hope Maximilian schachmann but could no longer follow the pace - and Carapaz did not let the victory be stolen from him. After that it was all about silver. The sprint went as expected wout van aert (Belgium) in front of the tour winner Tadej pogacar (Slovenia) prevail.

Geschke has Corona

The BDR was reduced by one driver before the start. Simon Geschke (Germany) gave a positive corona test the day before. roommate Emmanuel Buchman (Germany) then had to give another negative test – which luckily succeeded. The Czech too Michael Schlegel (Czech Republic) was not allowed to start. So at the start there were still 128 drivers together.
