Cycling: Mark Cavendish is finally back. The 36-year-old Brit won today's stage of the Tour de France. He celebrates his 31st stage win at the Grand Boucle. His last success came in 2016.
Cavendish sprints, wins and cries
Unbelievable Cav! After four winless years Mark Cavendish (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) finally won another stage in the Tour de France. The Briton was ahead in a bunch sprint Bouhanni born (Arkéa – Samsic) and Jasper Phillipsen (Alpecin – Fenix) successful. He celebrates his incredible 31st day victory in the Tour of France - and is therefore only 3 victories behind Eddy Merckx. It is logical that tears flow after the race. But one man's joy is another man's sorrow. Because outliers Brent Van Moer (Lotto – Soudal) almost wrote its own story. The Belgian kept the sprint teams on their toes and was only caught 200 meters from the finish line. In the end he should be 49th.
The drivers are on strike
The fourth stage of the Tour de France led over 150,4 kilometers from Redon to Fougères and began with a riders' strike. Due to the route on yesterday's section and the many falls, the peloton would like to make themselves heard. Many professionals are of the opinion that the tour organizer ASO and the world cycling association UCI should take more care of the safety of the riders. Therefore, the field stopped 10 kilometers after the sharp start and protested. After that, the tour entourage rolled on at the usual high speed and the first attacks followed. Finally, the Belgians were able to Brent Van Moer (Lotto – Soudal) and the Frenchman Pierre-Luc Perichon (Cofidis) but only got a little over two minutes credited. The sprinter teams seemed to have the duo under control. But when Brent Van Moer was still the soloist for the last 10 kilometers, the lead was still a little over a minute.
