Giro d'Italia #7 Preview: Next mass sprint in Termoli?

13 May 2021 by Michael Behringer

Ewan Caleb Giro d'Italia

Cycling: After today's mountain stage, tomorrow it may be the turn of the sprinters again. In Termoli we expect Caleb Ewan to win again. Or can the outliers prevail?

Breakaway vs Sprinter & Sagan vs Ewan

Although the stage profile is significantly more demanding than it was a few days ago, it could also be in Termoli come to a mass sprint. After starting in notaresco is it over 181 Kilometer to the destination. The biggest challenges have to be mastered in the first half of the section. A lead group will form and quickly gain a lead, but the sprinter teams will catch them in time. Especially on Lotto – Soudal will it arrive again since you are using Caleb ewan probably have the strongest sprinter in their ranks. The Australian is looking to win his second stage at this year's Giro d'Italia tomorrow. In order for this to succeed, however, he has to survive the 4-5 climbs. This is only possible if the pace is not too high for him. Especially the team Bora-hansgrohe um Peter Sagan might be interested in distancing him after all.

Velomotion prognosis: Ewan fights through again

Granted: a tip on Caleb ewan is a bit boring in a classic bunch sprint. Tomorrow, however, such a Sprint Royal is anything but certain. The Aussie has proven he's the fastest man in the peloton. If he gets into a good position and survives the first half of the stage, there can hardly be any other winner. Even the small hill, which has to be overcome a kilometer before the finish, suits Caleb Ewan. Different to James Nizzolo and Tim Merlier – both of which are currently to be regarded as the strongest competitors – he also has difficult target approaches. The same applies to peter sagan, which is why we should definitely have it on the bill tomorrow. The Slovakian will become a top favorite once his team has managed to distance Caleb Ewan. The insider tips come from the Israel Start-Up Nation team. Patrick Bevin and Davide Cimolai could land a surprise coup.

☆☆☆ Caleb ewan (Lotto – Soudal)
☆ ☆ Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe), James Nizzolo (Qhubeka – Assos)
☆ Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Fenix), Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo – Visma), Davide Cimolai (Israel Start Up Nation)
