Giro d'Italia #6: Breakaway Gino Mäder wins the rainy stage

13 May 2021 by Michael Behringer

Mader Giro d'Italia

Cycling: Gino Mäder celebrates the greatest success of his career. The Swiss won the sixth stage of the Giro d'Italia close to the border. The new overall leader is the Hungarian Attila Valter (Groupama – FDJ). In the battle for overall victory, a duel between Remco Evenepoel and Egan Bernal is slowly but surely emerging.

Mader Giro d'Italia

Mäder saves himself to the finish

In the pouring rain Gino Mader (Bahrain – Victorious) won the 160km sixth stage of the Giro d'Italia from Grotte di Frasassi to Ascoli Piceno. At the Swiss Pass San Giacomo - today's final ascent - the Swiss left all his companions behind near the border. When he was on the road as a soloist for the last few kilometers, the drivers in the rankings launched their attacks. Above all Egan Bernal It was (Ineos Grenadiers) who showed his strength again and made the best impression. could only follow him Julius Ciccone (Trek - Segafredo), Daniel Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) and Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck - Quick Step). But the quartet was 12 seconds too late. The German Emmanuel Buchman (Bora – hansgrohe) lost 28 seconds to the four strongest drivers today. As is well known, bad weather does not suit the Ravensburger. The new overall leader is – as the first Hungarian at the Giro d'Italia – Attila Valter (Groupama – FDJ).

Ineos Grenadiers seven strong

Before the favorites dared to go on the offensive for overall victory, eight breakaways shaped the course of the race. Geoffry Bouchard (AG2R - Citroën), Simone Ravanelli (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec), Jimmy Janssens (Alpecin-Fenix), Simon Guglielmi (Groupama – FDJ), Dario Cataldo (movistar), Build Mollema (Trek – Segafredo), as well Matej Mohoric (Bahrain – Victorious) and his teammate Gino Mader (Bahrain – Victorious) from Switzerland broke away. The lead was already over 6 minutes when the Ineos Grenadiers team in the main field suddenly picked up the pace. Directly after the first climb of the day, the British team kept the speed high and completely ripped the peloton apart. Among other things, the overall leader also fell Alessandro De Marchi (Israel Start-Up Nation) back. The Italian – like the other professionals who have been left behind – should no longer be able to connect to the group of favorites.

Bardet & Ciccone attack boldly

In the second climb, the leading group finally fell apart. dario cataldo, Bauke Mollema, Matej Mohoric and Gino Mader proved to be the strongest climbers and descents. In that same one there was the next attack in the main field. Romain Bardet (DSM), Julius Ciccone (Trek – Segafredo) and Alberto Bettiol (EF – Nippo) were able to break away and gradually catch a few professionals from the former top group. But the Ineos Grenadiers team did not let up in the pouring rain and caught up with the chasing group before the final climb. There then left Matej Mohoric the powers as he has previously worked tremendously for his Swiss teammate. And at the end of the day, it should pay off. Gino Mader left his two remaining companions almost effortlessly.

BikeExchange team vehicle gets Serry off the bike

After giving up Mikel Landa (Bahrain – Victorious) still during yesterday's stage, there were more tasks to report this morning. Joe Dombrowski (UAE) - until then wearer of the mountain jersey - could not compete in the sixth stage after his fall, as Pavel Shivakov (Ineos Grenadiers) and François Bidard (AG2R - Citroën). This morning there were still 184 of the original 179 starters in the race. On the way there should have been a few fewer due to the catastrophic weather conditions. Like it Pieter Serry (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) is not yet known. The Belgian was thrown off his bike by a BikeExchange team vehicle on the final climb, but was able to continue.
