Giro d'Italia #4: Dombrowski wins, De Marchi conquers Rosa

11 May 2021 by Michael Behringer

Dombrowski Giro d'Italia De Marchi

Cycling: On the rainy fourth stage of the Giro d'Italia there was a lot of movement in the overall standings. Breakaway Alessandro De Marchi will start tomorrow in the pink jersey. But Joe Dombrowski can be happy about the stage victory.

Dombrowski provides the next breakaway coup

Once again the escapees prevailed at the Giro d'Italia. On the 187-kilometer stage from Piacenza to Sestola, the breakaway consisted of 25 men. When it got bumpy after the middle of the stage, it became clear who of them could really fight for the day's victory. Because the breakaway group broke up, while behind them the field did not follow consistently in the pouring rain. Purely Taaramäe (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert) and Christopher Juul Jensen (BikeExchange) broke up together with Lokomotiv Quinten Hermans (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert) by her companions. The Belgian crosser worked for his leader from Estonia, who had the chance to take over the Maglia Rosa today. But on the final climb he broke down completely. Joe Dombrowski (UAE) closed the gap seemingly effortlessly and clinched his first Grand Tour stage win. The second place Alessandro De Marchi (Israel Start-Up Nation) can look forward to Rosa.

Landa strong, Buchmann weak

The peloton tackled the final climb a few minutes later. Led by the teams Bahrain - Victorious and Ineos Grenadiers, the peloton was thinned out powerfully. The overall leader Filippo Gana (Ineos Grenadiers) had to be torn as well as Joao almeida (Deceuninck - Quick Step). The Italian made the first attack Julius Ciccone (Trek – Segafredo). The Spaniard joined him a little later Mikel Landa (Bahrain – Victorious), the Russian Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana – Premier Tech), the Colombian Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) and the Briton Hugh Carthy (EF – Nippo) on. Together they could take on the British top favourites Simon yates (BikeExchange) drive out a few seconds. The German Emmanuel Buchman (Bora – hansgrohe) lost a few more seconds.
