Cycling: Brent van Moer made it and, despite little chance of success, made it to the finish ahead of the peloton. The Belgian broke away with three companions at the beginning of the stage and drove towards the greatest success of his career.
Brent van Moer manages breakaway coup
The 73rd edition of the Critérium du Dauphiné began today with a triumph for a breakaway. After 181,8 kilometers with start and finish in Issoire Brent van Moer (Lotto – Soudal) to the finish ahead of the group of favourites. The Belgian was part of a four-man breakaway group that also included the Austrian Patrick Gamper (Bora – hansgrohe), the American Ian Garrison (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) and the Frenchman Cyril Gautier (B&B Hotels p/b KTM) counted. While his three companions were caught on the last climb at the latest, Brent van Moer was able to assert himself sensationally at the front. Second place in the sprint of the pursuers went to Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Victorious). The German Nils Politt (Bora – hansgrohe) was sixth.
