Spectrum: The corona situation has again strengthened the trend towards bicycles and thus pushed up the sales figures. This applies in particular to e-bikes. What many bike buyers forget is adequate insurance. A representative survey by the YouGov portal on behalf of CHECK24 confirms that most bikers are poorly insured or not insured at all.
A number of bicycles are not insured
The trend is clearly towards high-quality bicycles. Especially e-bikes as well as high-quality mountain bikes and racing bikes are easily priced at 3.000 euros. Thieves are also happy about that, because theft and receiving stolen goods are flourishing.
“A surprising number of bikes are not insured”, says Braulio Dario Rissi. "In the event of theft, the owners are left with the damage. With e-bikes, that quickly amounts to 2.000 euros and more, while good anti-theft protection often only costs a few euros a month.”
In fact, a good two-thirds of Germans own a bicycle. Surprisingly they are 55 percent of all bicycles are not insured at all. Neither through a special bicycle insurance nor through household contents insurance. It should be noted that the Contents insurance numerous benefit exclusions having. Especially when it comes to performance. But on the contrary: Only 6 percent of all classic bicycles are optimally secured with bicycle insurance.
E-bikes are much better insured
The safety needs of e-bikers seem to be somewhat higher. Here are according to YouGov only 27 percent of all bikes are not insured. After all, 26 percent of e-bikes are optimally protected against theft and often even accidental damage through bicycle insurance.
The largest group of e-bikers (44 percent) at least relies on the benefits of household insurance. The big difference between household contents insurance and bicycle insurance is that many household contents insurance policies only pay up to a value of 500 or 1.000 euros.
In such a case, you are left with larger theft damage yourself. In addition to securing the actual value, there are also interesting additional modules. These include, for example, the insurance of wearing parts such as the battery, accidental damage or the costs of roadside assistance.
