New Pirelli PZero models: Better performance in competition and training

March 15, 2021 by Florian Nowak

Product news: With the new Pirelli PZero models, the Italian tire specialist is replacing the current predecessors and wants to set new standards for clincher tires with even better performance. The new Pirelli road bike tire series consists of two models, the PZero Race and PZero Road.

Four years ago, the Italian tire manufacturer got back into cycling after a long break and was able to make a name for itself in a very short time and even assert itself in the professional peloton. But since you are constantly striving for improvements, you are now presenting your new PZero models. As Successor to the PZero Velo the new tires come in two versions: namely the PZero Race with a focus on absolute performance and the PZero Road version for everyone who wants a durable all-rounder.

Pirelli PZero Race – The name says it all

The Pirelli PZero Race is a "classic" wired tire that focuses on maximum performance. The design of the tread is identical to that of the Tubeless Ready version of the same name, as is the rubber compound, which is made from the new SmartEvo compound. With its know-how from over 110 years of motorsport, Pirelli has put together a mixture of three functional polymers with "intelligent" properties that form the basis of the outstanding performance of SmartEvo. Each of the three polymers has specific performance characteristics and should combine all critical factors such as puncture resistance, rolling resistance and grip. The tire has been repeatedly tested by WorldTour teams such as AG2R Citroën, Trek-Segafredo and Team BikeExchange.

A special feature of the new PZero Race tire model is the construction of the nylon carcass with 120 TPI. As a result, the tire has a wider tread than the corresponding PZero Velo in all sizes. In addition, the carcass was equipped with a wider protection belt, called TechBelt Road. This has an additional layer of aramid fabric under the rubber compound, which provides additional protection for the tyre.

The Pirelli PZero Race is available in sizes 24, 26, 28 and 30 mm, in black or with a rubber sidewall (Classic) for 59,90 euros. The color variants yellow, red and white will also be available soon.

Pirelli PZero Road – The all-rounder

The new Pirelli PZero Road completes the new product series from the Italians. The all-rounder is geared towards longevity, but without having to forego comfort or good rolling resistance. For this purpose, the PZero Road was completely redesigned and differs from the race version in the tread design. Because here the grooves have a smaller distance to each other and are longer. The use of the Evo Compound rubber mixture also guarantees more versatile use. The Pirelli PZero Road is available in black and in widths of 24, 26 and 28 mm at a price of 39,90 euros.

More than Florian Nowak

Florian Nowak is a professional cyclist at the EuropeTour level and has competed in many international races. At the German championship in 2017, he was the best non-WorldTour professional in 7th place and was therefore able to recommend himself for the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships. But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
