Lumos: New light in the helmet sky?

March 13, 2021 by the editorial office

Product news: With Lumos, a new manufacturer has entered the world of helmets and is delivering new approaches with futuristic design and a modern safety concept. Because the focus is not only on protecting the head in the event of a fall. Instead, it shouldn't come to a fall in the first place. Thanks to the high-visibility concept from Lumos, you will be noticed very well in treacherous city traffic.

Clearly visible from the rear thanks to the light and direction indicator.

Lumos Ultra: The beginner and newcomer to the group

The Lumos Ultra is the latest in the start-up's portfolio and immediately scores with the relatively low price of €99,95. But when it comes to safety, it is in no way inferior to its bigger brothers and sisters. The Ultra, on the other hand, is only available in the standard version without MiPS for the other helmets.

A total of 90 COB LEDs are integrated in the helmet, 30 of which light up white, red and yellow. Chips On Board (COB) is a method of LED construction that has a number of advantages over conventional technologies. It allows for a more compact footprint while delivering higher light intensity, meaning you'll be seen from a greater distance. It also leads to a more even glow.

Technical data:

LEDs front: 30 knows
LEDs rear: 30 red, 30 yellow
features: Direction indicator, steady light, pulsing
Battery life: maximum 10 hours
Connection: Bluetooth 4.0
Weight about 370g

Soon you will also find a test for the Lumos Ultra!

Lumos Kickstart: With automatic brake light

The helmet is available from €179, but you have to do without the MiPS safety technology. With MiPS, the Lumos Kick-Start comes to €219. A price that is absolutely justified given the abundance of technology.

In addition to driving and direction lights, the Lumus Kickstart is also equipped with a brake light. The integrated acceleration sensor recognizes fully automatically when the speed is reduced by braking and uses full luminosity to inform the following traffic of the deceleration. Not only this safety feature, but also the integrated MiPS technology, which absorbs the turning forces of a fall very well in the event of an impact, makes the Lumos Kickstart a must-have on the road. Of course, the helmet is also well ventilated and thus dissipates warm air and moisture well when riding.

Technical data:

LEDs front: 10 knows
LEDs rear: 28 red, 2 yellow
features: Direction indicator, steady light, pulsing, brake light
Battery life: maximum 18 hours
Connection: Bluetooth 4.0
Weight approx. 360g (standard) / approx. 380g (MiPS)

Lumus Street: Stylish urban helmet

The Lumos Street is an absolutely stylish urban bike helmet that is available in matt black or high-gloss white. The shell helmet is fully protected and suitable for leisurely city tours. Of course, the Lumos Street lights both forwards and backwards in the corresponding colors and also has the turn signal/direction indicator lights integrated.

Like its little brother, the Kickstart, the Street also has an integrated acceleration sensor that automatically warns the following traffic in the event of deceleration. However, its luminosity is significantly brighter, at 600 lumens. The suggested retail price is €199 without MiPS technology and €229 with MiPS.

Technical data:

LEDs front: 22 knows
LEDs rear: 42 red/yellow
features: Direction indicator, steady light, pulsing, brake light
Battery life: maximum 10 hours
Connection: Bluetooth 4.0
Weight approx. 580g (standard) / approx. 590g (MiPS)

Lumos Matrix: high-end with gimmicks

Highest style factor paired with modern safety features, that is the Lumos Matrix helmet. The urban-style shell helmet is available in either high-gloss white or matt black and starts at €249 without MiPS technology. MiPS ensures that rotational forces are very well dissipated in the event of an impact and reduces trauma damage. With MiPS, the Lumos Matrix costs €279. All in all, not a little for a helmet, but if you add up the safety factor, absolutely justified. A helmet provides the best protection when it prevents an accident from occurring in the first place.

The high-visibility concept from Lumos ensures maximum safety, but above all visibility. Thanks to the 1000 lumen front lights and the fully programmable RBG LEDs on the back, you won't get lost in the rear tables of traffic. In addition to the automatic brake light function and eye-catching direction display, the back can also conjure up colorful images or patterns on the back of the head. The matrix LED field can be individually programmed using the Lumos mobile app. Not only can the blinking interval and brightness be set, but the pattern can also be adjusted. Depending on your preference and the time of year, you can create a conspicuous Christmas tree or a bright warning triangle at the back of your head.

Technical data:

LEDs front: 22 knows
LEDs rear: 72 RGB (programmable)
features: Direction indicator, steady light, pulsing, brake light, pattern
Battery life: maximum 10 hours
Connection: Bluetooth 4.0
Weight approx. 580g (standard) / approx. 590g (MiPS)
