Catalonia Tour #4: Ineos lets Chaves do it

March 25, 2021 by Michael Behringer

Cycling: Esteban Chaves has won the fourth stage of the Tour of Catalonia. The Colombian pulled away on the final climb and reached the top as a soloist. Adam Yates retains the leader's jersey.

Chaves climbs away

Stephen Chaves (BikeExchange) has snatched victory in stage four of the Tour of Catalonia. He proved to be the strongest climber on the 166,5-kilometer section from Ripoll to Port Ainé. He benefited from the fact that the Ineos team did not necessarily follow suit. The good positions in the overall standings – Adam Yates, Richie Porte and Geraint Thomas in places 1, 2 and 4 – the British team did not want to risk the exhausting tracking work. There Joao almeida (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) even lost contact with the group of favorites in the last few meters, the Portuguese gave up his third place overall to Thomas. Ineos Grenadiers now occupies the first three places in the overall standings.

Kämna in a strong breakaway group

Victory from the group of favorites was only possible today because a strong breakaway group was caught in good time. 12 men, including the German Lennard Kamna (Bora – hansgrohe), the Colombian Rigoberto Urán (EF – Nippo) and the Belgian thomas degendt (Lotto – Soudal) were in a promising position in front of the peloton. But the favorites didn't want to give away the stage win so easily. With Lennard Kämna, the last fugitive was caught around 14 kilometers before the finish line.
