Cycling: Bauke Mollema won the start of the Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var with an impressive start. The 34-year-old Dutchman will therefore be the leader tomorrow.
No one can follow Mollema
That was strong! Build Mollema (Trek – Segafredo) impressively demonstrated his early form today. With a courageous start, the 34-year-old Dutchman left all his competitors behind on the final climb. Even the hilly sprinters couldn't keep up - and neither could the mountain goats. After 186,8 kilometers between Biot and Gourdon, Bauke Mollema referred the Belgian greg van avermaet (AG2R Citroen) and the French Valentin Madouas (Groupama – FDJ) in second and third place. He now has a two-second lead in the overall standings.
Quintana is the defending champion
Although the 53rd Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var is probably better attended than ever before, top riders have won this tour in the past. Last year's winner is none other than Nairo Quintana (Arkea – Samsic). Won the year before Thibaut Pinot (Groupama – FDJ). Thomas Voeckler, Davide Rebellin, Philippe Gilbert, Laurent Jalabert and the German Rolf Gölz have also been included in the list of winners. This year's event comprises a total of three stages and ends accordingly on Sunday in Blausasc. Since it remains wavy and demanding, the fight for overall victory should remain exciting until the last day.
