Test / accessories: The Deuter Attack 16 is designed for use on rough terrain and with the volume for extensive day tours. With its 16L storage space, practical tool compartment and TÜV-certified SAS-TEC mutli-shock protector, it is in no way inferior to its competitors.
In 1898, Hans Deuter founded the mechanical canvas and linen weaving mill in Augsburg-Oberhausen, laying the foundation for a constantly developing company. Deuter has been producing accessories for sports such as mountaineering, skiing and mountain biking for many years now and, in addition to high quality, also focuses on sustainability and environmentally friendly production.

Visually, the Attack 16 is a typical trail backpack. On the front there are hooks for attaching a helmet, reflective strips to be seen on the road and the Deuter logo. Our test model came in the color Redwood-Marine, but is also available in two other color variants: Graphite-Shale and Khaki-Turmeric. In addition to the 16L, the Attack series also includes 14, 18, 20 and 22L versions.
If you don't want to wear your helmet on your head when going uphill, you can attach it to the two rubber hooks.
Typical for a trail backpack, the Attack 16 also has a well-organized tool compartment for quick access to tools, pumps and spare parts. Above that is the padded compartment for glasses and accessories. On the side there is an easily accessible compartment for smartphones and cards. There is no need to remove the pack to access the compartment, you can just reach back and easily unzip the zip with one hand. Definitely practical.
The large main compartment offers enough space for a day trip with spare clothing, camera equipment and snacks. As with most trail backpacks, an emergency plan with signals, emergency numbers and first aid instructions is printed on the inside and on the back wall there is a compartment for water bladders or a laptop. Behind it is the zip that grants access to the back protector.
We liked the fact that Deuter attached straps and clips for attaching a drinking tube to both shoulder straps.
TÜV certified protector and comfort
So that you can have fun on more demanding trails, the North Swabians have installed an SQA-500 protector from the German company SAS-Tec. The top ventilated 3D protector made of visco-elastic soft foam is not only TÜV-certified, but also offers sufficient protection and a very comfortable fit. The soft multishock material adapts to the shape of the back and does not have to be replaced after a fall. Of course, we still recommend checking the protectors for defects or damage after a fall.
Shoulder strap and load distribution
In addition to the visco-elastic protector, the back padding also offers a comfortable fit and nestles nicely to the shape. The adjustable shoulder straps distribute the weight comfortably and are well relieved by the hip belt. It is interesting that Deuter sewed an extra padding with a non-slip surface, which prevents slipping and unpleasant pressure points when shouldering a bike in alpine terrain. Small flexible pockets are sewn on both sides of the hip belt, which offer enough space for multi-tools or keys. The chest strap can also be easily adjusted using a kind of rail. Overall, all straps and straps are easily adjustable and are also suitable for those with a slightly larger waist circumference.
