European Track Cycling Championships: First medals awarded
The European Track Cycling Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria have started. On the first day, the Russians in particular were allowed to cheer. They won gold in both the men's team sprint and the women's team sprint. The Czech Republic and Greece won silver and bronze for men, Great Britain and Ukraine for women. Matthew Walls (Great Britain) triumphed in the scratch race ahead of Iuri Leitao (Portugal) and Sergei Rostovtsev (Russia). The Italian Martina Fidanza succeeded in the women's ahead of Hanna Tserakh (Belarus) and Tetyana Klimchenko (Ukraine).
Only Maximilian Lewy represents the BDR
From Germany, only Maximilian Lewy will participate in the 2020 European Track Cycling Championships in Plovdiv. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the German Cycling Federation (BDR) has decided not to participate in the European Championships, as Bulgaria has been classified as a risk area. The Germans can count on Maximilian Lewy to compete in the sprint and keirin. If the 33-year-old feels well, a start at the 1.000 Meter time trials are possible.
