Cycling: Tim Wellens won the 14th stage of the Vuelta a Espana. As a breakaway, he was able to assert himself against his companions in the winding finish. This is the second time he has celebrated at this year's Tour of Spain.
Well-manned breakaway group
After yesterday's time trial, today's Vuelta a Espana featured a slightly bumpy section. The 204,7th stage led over 14 kilometers from Lugo to Ourense. On the way it was valid with the Alto de Escairón (8,8 km à 3,8%), the Alto de Guitara (7,4 km à 3,9%) and the Alto de Abelaira (6,4 km à 4,2% ) to complete three mountains of the third category. Nevertheless, a mass sprint was possible. However, the sprinter teams had to control a seven-strong breakaway group. With Zdenek Stybar (Deceuninck – Quick Step), Thymen Arensmann (Sunweb), Dylan van baarle (Ineos) Michael Woods (EF), Tim Wellens (Lotto – Soudal), Pierre Luc Perichon (Cofidis) and Marc Soler (Movistar) the escape group was very strong. mmm
Tim Wellens uses the ideal line
When the French Equipe Direct Energie joined in the tracking work, the breakaway's lead fell drastically. But although the mutual attacks began there on the last mountain, the group was finally able to keep the peloton at a distance. And this divided on the last ten kilometers. Marc Soler, Tim Wellens and Zdenek Stybar were able to lose their companions first. But 1,3 kilometers from the finish line, the merger was successful again. Only Pierre Luc Perichon was no longer there. In a gripping battle, the six breakaways battled it out for the day's victory. The curvy end of the stage used Tim Wellens perfect looking. The Belgian took the inside lane and left Michael Woods no longer pass by even in the last meters. Tim Wellens is thus celebrating his second stage win in this year's Tour of Spain.
