Cycling: Hugh Carthy achieved great success at the Vuelta a Espana. The Brit won the twelfth stage up to the Alto de l'Angliru and thus claims in the fight for the overall victory. New leader is Richard Carapaz as Primoz Roglic revealed weaknesses in the red jersey today. The top four are now within 35 seconds of the overall standings.
20 men in the escape group
Today's twelfth stage of the Vuelta a Espana was short but sweet. It led the professionals over 109,4 kilometers from Pola de Laviana up to the dreaded Alto de l'Angliru (13,2 km at 9,4%). As if the final climb wasn't enough, there were already four climbs to be completed. Many experts therefore rightly describe the section as this year's queen stage of the Vuelta a Espana. With a lead over the peloton, 20 breakaways wanted to jump into the last third of the race. The German, among others, succeeded in doing this Andrew Schillinger (Bora – hansgrohe), the Italian Davide formolo (UAE) and the French wearer of the mountain jersey, William Martin (Cofidis).
Froome provides strong support services
In the peloton, the black and yellow team Jumbo – Visma initially controlled the race, before the blue and white team from Movistar took over again. So the main field was thinned out more and more. At the same time, the lead of the escapees quickly collapsed. It quickly became clear that today's winner would not come from the leading group. Also Chris Froome (Ineos) contributed to this. In the penultimate climb, the Brit even pushed the pace so hard at times that only his captain Richard Carapaz (Ineos) could hold his rear wheel. Jumbo - Visma reacted promptly and was able to close the gap. Much to the chagrin of Marc Soler (Movistar), who was dropped before the Angliru.
Jumbo - Visma dominant
After the work of Movistar and Ineos, the Jumbo – Visma team was a laughing third. To leaders Primois Roglic four strong helpers gathered eight kilometers from the finish line. They now kept the pace so high that no competitor could even think of an attack. On the contrary, little by little they flew back. Among other things, the Austrian could Felix Grossschartner (Bora – hansgrohe) no longer go along. The tempo work today was surprisingly dominant jonas vingegaard (Jumbo - Visma). The Dane is only 23 years old and hasn't really appeared as an absolute top climber so far.
Hugh Carthy celebrates his greatest success
3,5 kilometers from the finish Enric Mas Nicolau (Movistar) on the offensive. jonas vingegaard (Jumbo – Visma) was promptly by Sepp kuss (Jumbo – Visma) replaced. But captain Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) revealed weaknesses. The Slovenian could hardly hold the rear wheel of his helper. Also Daniel Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) stumbled. So saw Richard Carapaz (Ineos) got his chance. Together with Hugh Carthy (EF) he managed to catch up Enric Mas. Everyone struggled up the ramps at a slow pace. In the end, the differences remained small. With an attack 1,5 kilometers from the finish secures himself Hugh Carthy the day's victory Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana). This moves him up the rankings. New leader is Richard Carapaz, the weakness of Primois Roglic but could only use it to gain a small second.
