UCI eSports World Championship: Uranium, Campenaerts, van Vleuten & co. ensure a top starting field

24 November 2020 by Michael Behringer

Vuelta a Espana Favorites Uranium

Cycling: December 9th is the day. The UCI will host the first eSports World Championship on Zwift. Now we know that Rigoberto Uran, Victor Campenaerts and Annemiek van Vleuten will be there, among others.

Top starting field at the first UCI eSports World Championship

For a long time it was unclear how well-known the starting field for the UCI eSports World Championship 2020 would be. Now we know that for the first digital world championship on Zwift, some bangers will sign up for the entry list. On December 9th, Rigoberto Uran (EF), Victor Campenaerts (NTT), Esteban Chaves (Mitchelton – Scott), Alberto Bettiol (EF) and Tom Pidcock (Ineos) will be among those to roll onto the reel. The absolute world elite are at the start for the women with Anna van der Breggen (Boels – Dolmans), Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton – Scott) and Ashleigh Moolman (CCC – Liv). For Germany, Tanja Erath, Hannah Ludwig, Christa Riffel, Franziska Brauße and Finja Smekal, as well as Jonas Koch, Jason Osborne, Lucas Carstensen, Miguel Heidemann and Jonas Rapp will fight for the rainbow jersey.

In Watopia, 483 vertical meters await the pros

The rainbow jersey is awarded on the Zwift platform. Participants will complete a 50km route in the virtual landscape of Watopia. This offers a difference in altitude of 483 meters, although it should be particularly difficult towards the end. The last 6 meters are an almost 900 percent steep climb. The profile should therefore benefit strong pros, such as Annemiek van Vleuten for women and Rigoberto Uran for men. But even the classic hunters can calculate a lot. It will be particularly exciting to see whether the world-class pros can hold their own off the road against the experienced Zwift riders.
