Flyer Upstreet5 2021: Happy birthday lots of bikes!

13 October 2020 by Michael Faiss

Product News / E-Bike: Flyer turns 25 this year and can look back on an extremely successful first quarter of a century in the company's history. Versatile and high-quality e-bikes such as the Flyer Upstreet5, which will be available in 2021 model variants in 14 - including a particularly elegant and limited anniversary edition, are largely responsible for this.

Flyer celebrates 25th birthday

Flyer has been producing high-quality e-bikes since 1995 and is undoubtedly one of the pioneers of two-wheeled e-mobility. The Swiss put everything on the e-bike card at a time when the boom we have witnessed in recent years was by no means foreseeable. This willingness to take risks was rewarded, however, and so the name Flyer now stands for high-quality e-bikes of all kinds - from full-throttle enduro bikes for adrenaline junkies to relaxed step-through bikes for everyday use.

An e-bike is an e-bike is an e-bike?

E-bikes are now available in all imaginable forms, for every type of rider and every niche, no matter how small. However, the Flyer Upstreet5 is more of the old school – and that is expressly meant in a positive way. Somehow it's chic like a modern urban bike, but at the same time it comes with a suspension fork that you would expect more on trekking bikes and the powerful Panasonic motor, at least in the Ultimate version, can also keep up with powerful E-MTB units that are on the popular SUV e-bikes.

Those whose battery is always half empty and not half full may now doubt: That's neither fish nor meat! But we see it differently: The Upstreet5 is exactly one of those e-bikes where you don't have to decide what you want to do with it before you buy it. commute to work? No problem! weekend trips? Why not! everyday errands? child's play!

With a total of 14 (!) model and equipment variants, each usually with two or three frame shapes, the selection is gigantic. The customer not only has the choice of price or the quality of the equipment, but also the area of application can be defined a little. Models with derailleur or hub gears are available, and the Swiss are also entering four S-Pedelecs for 2021.

Tried: The Flyer Upstreet5 9.83 Anniversary Edition

Some time ago we had the opportunity to try the noble special model of the Flyer Upstreet5 series, the Upstreet5 9.83 Anniversary Edition for a round. As befits such an e-bike, it was able to demonstrate its qualities in an urban environment, in Frankfurt to be precise. At 7.500 euros, it's quite expensive for a bike in this class - so is it worth buying for lovers of high-quality e-bikes?

The Flyer special model stands out from the crowd in terms of looks alone; the polished, silver-colored surface of the frame gleams velvety in the sunlight. Rims, crank, seat post and cockpit have the same look.
Each of the total 1.000 Each copy comes with a custom number on the Anniversary plaque.
Even the Shimano disc brakes come in a matching silver look.

The equipment of the Upstreet5 anniversary model is quite appropriate for its price. The Panasonic GX Ultimate motor delivers up to 90 Nm of torque to the Gates carbon belt, which sets the electronic Rohloff E14 gear hub in motion on the rear wheel. If desired, it can also change gears automatically - in terms of low maintenance and longevity, the hub from the German cult manufacturer is still at the absolute top level.

Despite its power, the Panasonic GX Ultimate motor is pleasantly quiet.
Bandwidth, shift quality, reliability: The Rohloff E14 is a top shifter.

Compared to the other models in the Upstreet5 series, Flyer takes a slightly different approach to comfort with the anniversary model: A suspension fork is omitted here in favor of optics, maintenance and weight. Instead, the smaller 27,5 inch wheels with wide 47mm tires from WTB should provide comfort. A - in our opinion - good decision, which would at least optionally be interesting for the other models.

The 47mm wide WTB Horizon is a semi-slick tire that rolls lightly and quietly, still offers a bit of grip on gravel and can also score with decent puncture protection.

However, even on the short test ride, the exclusive e-bike showed that it can do much more than just look good: the combination of small wheels, wide tires and powerful motor is a lot of fun and knows how to perfectly balance comfort and smooth running. The E14 shifting hub does its job with stoic composure and doesn't let itself be disturbed by hectic shifting maneuvers or steep slopes. Thanks to the high-quality lighting from Supernova, the folding lock attached to the frame and the luggage rack, it is also equipped for all everyday tasks.

Of course, you don't necessarily have to go for the limited special model for such a driving experience. The regularly available Upstreet5 7.83 comes with comparably high-quality equipment and is 500 euros cheaper - even if you have to do without the really chic effect paintwork, among other things.
