Cycling: Primoz Roglic has won a curious final of Liege - Bastogne - Liege. The Slovenian passed the already jubilant Julian Alaphilippe on the finish line. The world champion had already made sure that the Swiss couldn't get past him with a wave against Marc Hirschi. He was then relegated to fifth place.
Two Swiss in the breakaway group
Eleven mountains, 257 kilometers and 175 riders - that was Liège - Bastogne - Liège 2020. Postponed due to the corona virus, the one-day classic will take place parallel to the Giro d'Italia this time. So some riders who would have loved to have been here in Belgium are now in Italy. Nevertheless, the starting field was impressive. With Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) the newly crowned world champion was also there. As expected, the Frenchman didn't dare to join the early nine-man breakaway. Instead they made themselves Inigo Elosegui (movistar), Kobe Goossens (Lotto – Soudal), Kenny Molly (Bingoal – Wallonia), Mathijs Paasschens (Bingoal – Wallonia), Omer Goldstein (Israel Start Up Nation), Valentine Ferron (Total Direct Energy), Paul Ourselin (Total Direct Energie), as well as the two Swiss Michael Schar (CCC) and Gino Mader (NTT) on the run.
Alaphilippe opens the big fight
The two Swiss riders were particularly strong in the breakaway group. But also Michael Schar and Gino Mader couldn't save themselves from the peloton. opened 14 kilometers from the finish Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) the big fight of the favorites. The world champion could only on the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons Marc Hirschi (Sunweb), Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) and Tadej pogacar (UAE) to follow. Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos) also seemed to have the legs for it but suffered a technical failure. Just like Julian Alaphilippe a few kilometers earlier. He had to change his bike twice and he also changed his shoes.
Roglic disgraces Alaphilippe
Because the quartet was not in agreement at the front, it was able to in the last kilometer Matej Mohoric (Bahrain – McLaren) catch up. In the sprint for victory, however, he had no chance after this feat. Julian Alaphilippe had the best position. But Marc Hirschi appeared to be faster and passed the Frenchman on the left. However, the world champion missed the Swiss with a wave, so that he had to dodge and even slipped off the pedal. Alaphilippe celebrated the victory - but too early. Because right next to him was actually still sprinting Primois Roglic over. This means that the runner-up in this year's Tour de France wins his first monument. And Julian Alaphilippe? He was subsequently penalized by the jury to fifth place.
