Cycling: Ruben Guerreiro won the ninth stage of the Giro d'Italia. The Portuguese was able to beat Jonathan Castroviejo in the uphill sprint. The Swiss Kilian Frankiny was stage fourth.
8 riders in the leading group
From San Salvo to Roccaraso, the pros had to cover 208,0 kilometers and several mountain classifications at the Giro d'Italia. Unsurprisingly, some escapees hoped for a chance to win the day. The Swiss Kilian Frankiny (Groupama – FDJ) formed together with Larry warbasse (AG2R La Mondiale), Jonathan Castroviejo (Ineos) Mikkel Bjerg (UAE), Ruben guerreiro (EF), Edward Sepulveda (movistar), Ben O'Connor (NTT) and Giovanni Visconti (Vini Zabù – KTM) the breakaway of the day.
Guerreiro gets the day's win
Successful on a wet road Jonathan Castroviejo 6,2 kilometers from the finish, the decisive attack. Together with the Portuguese Ruben guerreiro the Spaniard was able to break away from his companions. The Ineos professional then rode the final climb almost exclusively from the front. Ruben Guerreiro knew how to take advantage of this. In the last 100 meters he attacked Jonathan Castroviejo in the steepest section of the mountain and clearly distanced him. Dared to get out of the group of favourites Lucas Hamilton (Mitchelton-Scott) and Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos) an attack. This allowed both of them to gain a few seconds. Small gaps also opened up in the group of favourites. leader Joao almeida (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) lost a few seconds to his pursuers. Again they were particularly strong wilco kelderman (Sunweb) and Jakob Fuglsang (Astana).
