Giro d'Italia #18 Preview: Showdown already at the Stelvio Pass?

21 October 2020 by Michael Behringer

Giro d'Italia Tao Geoghegan Hart

Cycling: The king's stage of the Giro d'Italia is coming up. Tomorrow the pros will have to climb the Stelvio Pass, among other things. The classification drivers must put their cards on the table. Our bet is for Tao Geoghegan Hart to win.

Even the Stelvio Pass provokes attacks

And the Giro d'Italia continues with the mountain stages over 200 kilometers. Because on the way from Pinzolo to Laghi di Cancano this mark is again exceeded by seven kilometers. And there's plenty of ups and downs. A total of four climbs have to be completed, two of which belong to the first category and one each to the second and the highest category. While the first two climbs should only be interesting for the breakaways, things get serious in terms of the overall classification at the latest when we reach the foot of the Stelvio Pass (24,8 km á 7,4%). This enormously long mountain will already lead to attacks targeting the Maglia Rosa.

Velomotion Prediction: Will Tao Strike Geoghegan Hart Again?

The Passo Torri di Fraele (9,0 km at 6,8%) then follows the not-so-long descent of the Stelvio Pass. Significantly shorter and less steep, the wheat will still be separated from the chaff here. After all, the drivers not only have almost 200 kilometers in their legs, but also three tough mountains and 17 days of racing in the past 19 days. Whoever can put up with this torture best has the best chance of winning the stage tomorrow. The best impression left on the previous mountain stages Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineo). With the Brit having to make up time, we believe in an offensive driving style that will pay off.

☆☆☆ Tao Geoghegan Hard (Ineos)
* * Joao Almeida (Deceuninck – Quick-Step), Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb)
* Vincenzo Nibali (Trek – Segafredo), Domenico Pozzovivo (NTT), Rafal Majka (Bora – hansgrohe)
