Rocky Mountain Overtime Pack: Battery boost for over 1000 Wh

September 4, 2020 by the editorial office

Test: Crossing the Alps on an e-bike or day tours with intensive altitude gain. The standard battery charge of around 600 Wh is usually not sufficient for this. Usually after just over 1200 meters in altitude you have used up the last reserves of the energy storage, insofar as you ride in the upper support modes. So it is important to have additional capacity for the e-mountain bike.

If you don’t need a new battery for your Rock Mountain Powerplay E-Bike, 999 If you're looking to buy a battery for less than a quarter of an hour, the Overtimepack is a great option. For €680 (RRP), you get the additional 330 Wh and can enjoy longer rides without any major installation work.

Rocky Mountain Overtimepack: Compatibility

The Overtimepack is compatible with most Rocky Mountain Powerplay models, but depends heavily on the model year and the built-in damper. Because the additional battery and damper often get in the way of each other, especially with smaller frame sizes.

The official Rocky Mountain Overtimepack compatibility list.

Rocky Mountain Overtime Pack: Assembly

The Rocky Mountain Overtime Pack is as easy to assemble as a bottle cage and even uses the same screw connections. The supplied 50 gram light aluminum bracket is simply attached to the screws provided and then screwed onto the battery pack using a 5mm Allen key. Just connect and you're done.

The Overtimepack is recognized fully automatically and does not have to be configured separately. Communication with the app also works perfectly and the total capacity of the integrated battery and overtime pack is calculated. Because the system is located directly in the lower frame triangle, the center of gravity remains low, which has a positive effect on the handling. With some other manufacturers, the additional battery is transported in the backpack, which has a rather negative effect on the weight distribution between bike and rider.

The integrated battery can also be charged via the charging connection on the Rocky Mountain Overtimepack, so that the annoying plugging is no longer necessary. In this way, the range extender can remain permanently mounted on the bike. During use, the overtime pack is always drained first and then the main battery.

The main battery can also be charged by the Overtimepack. If this is empty and you are just resting in a hut, simply plug it in, wait about 2 hours and the main battery will be charged to almost 50% again.

Rocky Mountain Overtimepack: test range

The Bavarian Forest is known for its technical downhills, if you are equipped with e-performance and enough battery capacity, the downhills quickly become uphills. In our test lap around the Großer Arber we managed with a full main battery and a full overtime pack 43 km and 1870 meters of altitude with mostly full support level. Because the technical terrain demands a lot here.

There is no noticeable difference in performance. The only drawback, however, is that the capacity of the Overtimepack is not taken into account in the iWoc control. This always shows the full charge level until the main battery is attacked.

The Rocky Mountain Overtimepack is a well thought-out battery extension that not only brings additional capacity, but also charges the main battery. By mounting it in the lower frame triangle, the center of gravity of the Powerplay e-bikes remains low and gives the bike additional riding stability. Nevertheless, if you calculate the ratio between Wh and investment, the Overtimepack is really not a bargain, but cheaper than investing in a new, more powerful battery. All in all, the system is extremely well thought out and easy to assemble.
