Tour de France #19 Preview: Last chance for Peter Sagan

September 17, 2020 by Michael Behringer

Peter Sagan Sam Bennett Tour de France Green Jersey

Cycling: The Tour de France 2020 is coming to an end. Tomorrow the interesting 19th stage awaits us, which could be interesting for breakaways - but also for Peter Sagan.

Peter Sagan Tour de France 2020 stages

Peter Sagan must seize this opportunity

Tomorrow's 19th stage ends in the far east of France - and thus close to French Switzerland. The destination of Champagnole is reached after a total of 166,5 kilometers. After the start in Bourg-en-Bresse, motivated breakaways will try to take over the race. Actually, the section would have been made for her, but a team should have something against it. Bora – hansgrohe will want to use this penultimate chance Peter Sagan to get into position again. With a bit of luck, the battle for the green jersey will turn around today – at least for the time being.

Highlights of Stage 19 of the 2020 Tour de France

  • 13:30 Neutral start in Bourg-en-Bresse
  • 13:45 Sharp start in Bourg-en-Bresse
  • 84,5 km before the finish: mountain classification cat. 4, Côte de Château-Chalon (4,3 km à 4,7%)
  • 49,0km to go: intermediate sprint at Mournans
  • Arrival in Champagnole after 166,5 kilometers

Velomotion prognosis: In the fight for green, things will get tight again

It seems almost unreal. Peter Sagan (Bora - hansgrohe) has been fighting for days to reduce his deficit in the fight for the green jersey. In previous years, the Slovak had always had a comfortable lead and won the points classification almost in passing. But at that Tour de France Everything is different in 2020. Sam Bennett (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) leads before the start of stage 19 with 52 points. Since both are likely to get nothing in the time trial, only tomorrow's stage and the last leg to Paris remain. Accordingly, Bora – hansgrohe has to throw everything into the balance today. We expect the German racing team to make the race difficult and control the breakaways. The intermediate sprint is on a slight incline and generally the last third of the race is extremely bumpy. Here you could get Sam Bennett in trouble and score crucial points both in the intermediate sprint and in the finish sprint. It is even possible that Peter Sagan may wear the green jersey after this 19th stage, but loses it again in a mass sprint in Paris.
