Cycling: Peter Sagan is once again causing a stir. On the eleventh stage, the Slovak caused danger with a maneuver in a bunch sprint. Now he has been punished for it - and the fight for the green jersey has been decided.
Sagan loses his second place
A second place in the bunch sprint would be for Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) was a top result. In a thrilling sprint, the Slovak just narrowly escaped in Poitiers today Caleb ewan (Lotto – Soudal) defeated. But then the jury intervened. Peter Sagan is relegated to 85th and last place in the peloton. As TV pictures show, the Slovak in the sprint between the gang and wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma) squeezed through. He leaned heavily on the Belgian's shoulder. Although he was able to stay on the bike at top speed, he found the action anything but okay. Immediately after crossing the finish line, he gave Peter Sagan the middle finger.
Has the fight for the green jersey been decided?
This decision by the jury not only affects the result of today's stage, but also decisively in the fight for the green jersey. Peter Sagan is now a whopping 68 points behind Sam Bennett. In order to catch up, the Slovak will not only have to go into the break once in the coming days. Already in 2017 Peter Sagan could not win the jersey for the best points at the Tour de France because the jury intervened. At that time, the three-time world champion was even excluded from the further course of the Tour of France - wrongly! This time, however, the intervention, while harsh, seems justified.
