Cycling: Tomorrow is the day. With Milan – Sanremo the first monument of the season is held. Much later than usual - but no less exciting.
Milan – Sanremo: Changed routing
We write August and expect on 8.8. the first monument of the year. Due to the corona pandemic, Milan - Sanremo 2020 was canceled from 21.3. postponed to tomorrow Saturday. This turns the spring classic into a summer classic. But not only the date has changed. The organizers also had to adjust the route. That's how it works 299,0 km long one-day races this time not along the Ligurian coast, but through the interior of the country. As a result, the Turchino and the following Capi are missing. The Nava is waiting for the drivers about 45 kilometers before the finish line - a new and five-kilometer climb. However, this should not really change the conditions for the professionals. Because the traditionally exciting finale with the cipressa, In knoll and the home stretch on the Via Roma is also this year in the program of Milan - Sanremo.
Will Gilbert get his last monument?
The list of contenders for Milan – Sanremo is longer than for any other monument. Must be particularly motivated Philip Gilbert (Trek – Segafredo). The Belgian has already won 4 out of 5 monuments – only the Primavera is still missing. The now 38-year-old will have to fight with his ex-teammate and last year's winner, among others Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick Step), Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix), Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe), greg van avermaet (CCC), Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos) and with a number of absolute top sprinters. They have to try at the Cipressa and the Poggio not to lose touch with the first group. So that shouldn't be a problem wout van aert (Jumbo - Visma). The Belgian won the Strade Bianche in an impressive manner last weekend and is therefore also a top favorite for Milan – Sanremo.
The Primavera is broadcast live on Eurosport
As usual, the one-day race from Milan to Sanremo live on Eurosport and in the Eurosport Player be tracked. The transmission of the 111th edition of Primavera begins at 15: 50, which means that the spectators can definitely follow the last 100 kilometers live. Until then, not much is likely to happen with the longest monument of cycling anyway. A breakaway group usually sets off early on, but this will no longer play a role in the crucial phase. Despite the lower number of drivers per team, this shouldn't change this year either. The organizer RCS Sport has 27 teams invited allowed for it only six riders per team.
