How big that cargo bike boom actually is, but even many experts would not have expected it. To a A market survey by the European lobby association came up with a correspondingly surprising result "Cycling Industries Europe" (CIE).
Massive increase in sales
As part of the first "European Cargo Bike Industry Survey", anonymized sales data was collected from 38 brands of cargo bikes. According to this, all manufacturers sold around 2018 cargo bikes across Europe in the base year 17.800. In 2019, sales were already at 28.500 units, which corresponds to an increase of around 62 percent.
For the current year, the manufacturers expect sales of 43.600 units and thus growth of 53 percent. Particularly interesting: In 2018, none of the manufacturers was able to sell more than 5.000 cargo bikes. In 2020, three companies already want to break this mark.

In addition to the pure sales figures, the survey brought other interesting facts to light. The market shares of cargo bikes for private use are increasing just as quickly as in the commercial sector. This shows that numerous companies are also looking to use cargo bikes for logistical tasks.
“We have noticed for some time that the market for cargo and delivery bikes has really high potential for the bicycle industry in Europe. This survey gives me great confidence that we are on the right track as the industry is thriving and a diverse range of vehicles are increasingly meeting all market needs across Europe.” - Kevin Mayne - CEO Cycling Industries Europe
The largest proportion of cargo bikes with electric motors. According to current figures, the market share of cargo bikes without an electric motor fell to 2018 percent between 31 (2019 percent) and 25. Denmark follows on the places (4 entries) and with 3 entries each Great Britain and the Netherlands.
The next survey by the "Cycling Industries Europe" lobby association will take place in spring 2021.
