Bulls E-Stream Evo AM 3 E-MTB on test: Universally applicable with great endurance

July 16, 2020 by Michael Faiss

Bulls E-Stream Evo AM 3

Test: With the Bulls E-Stream Evo AM 3, the Cologne-based company is sending a strong E-MTB all-rounder into the 2020 season, which is particularly impressive with its great motor and large battery. The equipment is coherent and also allows excursions into demanding terrain.

With the Brose Drive S Mag motor, the Bulls E-Stream Evo is perhaps the best E-MTB drive at the moment. Powerful, quiet and with a lot of dynamics and a natural driving experience. In combination with the 750Wh battery, a strong drive duo.

Customers can choose between a 555Wh or 750Wh battery in the down tube.
The component mix of Shimano XT and SLX circuit components is convincing.

Describing the seating position of a bicycle is difficult because everyone experiences it differently. Of course there are clear cases: Comfortable trekking bikes, extreme downhill bikes - it gets complicated with all-rounders like the Bulls E-Stream Evo AM 3. It walks the fine line between sporty mountain bike and potent touring bike and finds a successful balance to satisfy representatives of both sides.

The display-operating unit combination is compact and easy to use. Unfortunately, the integrated display is stingy with information and is also difficult or impossible to read in direct sunlight.

Strong climber with a good engine

The E-Stream Evo AM has its own character, which becomes relatively clear from the first meters. You sit centrally and comfortably, always have a good view of what is happening and benefit from an overall modern, but not too extreme geometry. It acts quite directly on the level, but does not get nervous due to its generous length. The concept also works wonderfully on climbs: the steep front ensures that the front wheel always stays firmly on the ground, even on ramps, and the long chainstays mean you can sit comfortably in the saddle even on steep inclines. The rear triangle is also quite active in moderate terrain, but doesn't sag too deeply.

The affordable suspension from RockShox cuts a fine figure at moderate speeds. On longer descents and at high speeds, however, the 35 suspension fork and the deluxe damper quickly reach their limits.

The engine is also a key factor in the convincing climbing performance. With the Brose Drive S Mag, Bulls has installed one of the most powerful drives on the market and you can really feel it. It's nice that the engine can also work sensitively if you want it to. A benefit is its low volume; audible yes, but never intrusive, even in the highest support level. Operation via the intuitive control panel is easy to do without having to study the instructions for a long time. Only the integrated display is difficult to read under the midday sun.

Safe in moderate terrain

The Bulls isn't quite as convincing when it's off-road towards the valley. The more demanding the terrain, the less the overall concept of the E-Stream Evo AM works. As long as things aren't too rough and you don't pick up too much speed, the good-natured chassis provides a lot of security, the tires claw into the trail and the very good Shimano SLX 4-piston brakes always bring bike and rider to a safe standstill. The bike quickly reaches its limits on difficult trails. The 150mm suspension from RockShox does its job quite well, even if the damping seems overwhelmed at times when riding rough. A sensible and inexpensive tuning measure would be to install a slightly more grippy front tire with a soft rubber compound. Off-road handling would certainly benefit from that.

A real everyday plus are the MonkeyLink interfaces at the front and rear. Not only is it child's play to retrofit a lighting system here, which is then powered by the battery. It is also possible to mount correspondingly compatible mudguards.

The Bulls E-Stream Evo AM 3 is a versatile and technically impressive E-MTB. With its great Brose motor, which combines sensitivity and power very well, and the large 750Wh battery in the down tube, it is based on one of the best drives in this price range. The geometry is sporty with a healthy dose of touring DNA. The rest of the spec doesn't make any major blunders either, although we're sure that a more powerful front tire could elicit even more trail potential from the Bulls.
