Test: It doesn't always have to be the big names. With its exotic ETR 3 mid-engine and extremely slim battery, the Bottechia Evo Start proves that thinking outside the box can definitely be worthwhile.

An e-bike with the slim silhouette of the Bottechia Evo Start – despite a central motor and 504Wh battery – would have been completely unthinkable two or three years ago at a price of just over 2.000 euros. Technically, the ETR 3 motor is pleasing, which pushes quietly and quite powerfully, even if it doesn't quite reach the alleged 90Nm torque. In view of the Bottechia's relaxed range of use, we don't find it tragic that it doesn't act as sensitively and also pushes a little. The geometry puts the rider in an upright position and is very good for long tours or everyday use. The equipment is cheap, but without major slip-ups and serves its purpose. The good-natured but slightly indirect handling would certainly benefit from a slightly shorter stem, which can also be retrofitted inexpensively after purchase.
