E-MTB for ultimate downhill fun: The Flyer Uproc 6 2021 in the first test

July 13, 2020 by Michael Grosse-Hering

Product news: Short test: Flyer surprises with a brand new Uproc 2021 for the 6 model year. A newly developed carbon frame, the Bosch Performance CX motor with 85 Nm and uncompromising equipment promise pure driving pleasure. We present the equipment variants of the Flyer Uproc 6 2021 and have already been able to test the top model.

In April 2020, the traditional Swiss brand Flyer celebrated it 25 anniversary. The e-bike specialist is a pioneer from the very beginning and is known for high-quality bikes. For 2021, Flyer has relaunched the established Uproc 6 after more than two years of development. With a full carbon frame, 160 mm rear travel, Bosch Performance CX drive, wheel mix and numerous technical refinements, the Uproc 6 is designed to be fun and perform downhill.

Flyer Uproc 6 2021: The facts

  • Frame material: Carbon
  • Engine: Bosch Performance CX (85 Nm)
  • Battery pack: Bosch Power Tube 625
  • Display: Bosch Purion/Kiox
  • Suspension travel: 170/160 mm (f./h.)
  • wheel size: Mullet mix (29 / 27.5)
  • models: 3 trim levels (6.50, 8.70, 9.50)
  • Price: 6.999 - 10.999 Euro

The heart of the Uproc 6 2021 is the newly developed carbon frame. The four-bar linkage offers 160 mm of spring travel at the rear and looks like it was made of one piece. Large dimensioned bearings should offer a long-lasting function. The damper is now, untypically for the Flyer, almost horizontal in the frame triangle. Clever details such as the Fidlock bottle holder or the speed sensor integrated into the dropout complete the refreshing, new appearance. The drive components from Bosch are beautifully integrated. Practical: The PowerTube 625 battery is removed from the side of the down tube. The Swiss do not use a lock for locking and instead use a 6 mm Allen key to fix the battery to avoid rattling. This is conveniently always on board and hidden in the rear wheel axle. There is also a charging socket on the bike.

When it comes to geometry, Flyer is also keeping up with the times and has given the Uproc 6 modern dimensions: 64,5 degrees steering angle, 470 mm reach and 445 mm chain stays (size L) are not extreme, but they are modern and very suitable for the promised descent qualities.

Flyer Uproc 6 2021: equipment variants and geometry

The Uproc 6 is available in three configurations. The customer also has three color options to choose from for each equipment variant. All models come standard with the Bosch Purion Display. The slightly smarter Kiox display can be ordered on request and for an additional charge of 150 euros.

When it comes to the build quality, Flyer leaves nothing to chance, equipping the three models with robust and proven components. All models feature suspension and damping via forks with 38 mm stanchions. The "entry-level" Uproc 6 6.50 costs a whopping 6.999 Euro, relies on a RockShox suspension; consisting of brand new ZEB fork and Deluxe Select dampers. The other models both have a Fox chassis. In addition, all models have modern 12-speed gears from Sram and Shimano.

Appropriate and stiff at the same time: RockShox ZEB…
...and Fox 38

What they all have in common is the tires. Fortunately, Flyer does without lightweight construction and specifies robust and very well cushioning tires from Maxxis with DD carcass. An Assegai 29×2.5 at the front and a Minion DHF 27.5×25 at the rear.

The top model Uproc 6 9.50 for 10.999 Euro comes with exclusively premium components. The Fox Factory suspension with a 38 Grip2 fork is highly adjustable. Massive 4-piston Magura MT7 brakes provide the necessary stopping power. The front brakes even feature 220 mm discs. The 12-speed SRAM X01 Eagle AXS groupset promises crisp shifting, which, like the Reverb AXS dropper post, is wireless and controlled by electric assistance.

Flyer Uproc 6 2021: First driving impression

We had the opportunity to test the Flyer Uproc 6 in the top version "9.50" for two days in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.

On paper, the geometry data with 470 mm reach, 64,5 degree steering angle and 445 mm chainstays (size L) promised a very fun, downhill-heavy bike. And that's exactly what it was!

The setup was found comparatively quickly. The wireless controllers of the AXS seat post and gears can be perfectly adjusted to personal preferences. The shock setup is also easy to find; adjusting the Fox 38 Grip2, on the other hand, takes a little more time. Two compression and rebound stages each require an accurate setup.

When you first sit down, you quickly feel comfortable. Thanks to the modern, but not too extreme geometry. On the technical climb, however, you quickly realize that the Uproc 6 is designed more for the descent. In steep passages you have to put a lot of pressure on the front to keep the 29er front wheel on the ground. In addition, due to the low bottom bracket, we often had to struggle with hard pedal hits. But that was only noticeable in extremely technical terrain.

If it gets extremely technical and steep, the Uproc 6 tends to lift the front wheel

The Bosch Performance CX  with its 85 Nm however, was able to fully convince us. Powerful (even in low cadences), dynamic and intuitively controllable, especially in eMTB mode, it is currently one of the best motors on the market.

The Uproc 6 was able to fully demonstrate its strengths on the downhill. The components are unconditionally designed for maximum fun downhill. Starting with the excellent Maxxis tires in the stable and top-damping DD version, through the almost devilishly powerful and stable Magura MT7 brakes, to the excellent chassis. To get to the point: the Uproc 6 is just plain fun on the descent! In high-speed passages, the slack steering angle and the finely working, stiff Fox 38 help to ensure smooth running. However, agility is by no means neglected. The Uproc 6 follows every steering command calmly and can be thrown willingly into the bends with a little emphasis. The chassis feels more than 160 mm at the rear. Sensitive at the beginning of the spring travel, but with enough counter pressure to be able to defy hard impacts.

All in all, the new Flyer Uproc 6 was convincing. An excellent overall package of harmonious equipment and descent-oriented geometry. Flyer this perfection can also be paid for princely...
