Jasha Sutterlin: “Your only opponent in cycling is yourself”

June 19, 2020 by Michael Behringer

Jasha Sutterlin Interview

Cycling: Jasha Sütterlin has been riding for the German team Sunweb since this season. Before that, he was at Alejandro Valverde's side for years. He himself is still waiting for a great success - but he will certainly not give up.

Jasha Sütterlin - known as a loyal and reliable helper

Jasha Sütterlin's career began in 2011. The Freiburg-born professional wore the colors of the Thüringer Energie team before he was signed by Movistar in 2014. From then on he could be seen at major races – alongside Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana, among others. Known and valued as a loyal and reliable helper, he was only rarely allowed to drive on his own account. However, his class regularly shines through in time trials, which has enabled him to celebrate three German runners-up championships. In 2017, he won the final stage of the Vuelta a la Comunidad de Madrid with a spirited attack just before the finish line and thus his first and so far only international elite race. After moving to the German team Sunweb, he would like to achieve even more success in the future.

How do you motivate yourself to train during the Corona break?

Jasha Sutterlin: “Both now and in winter, what motivates me is that every day before I get on my bike, I imagine being in top shape when the races start again. Just the thought of seeing the other guys again and putting a number on the shirt. And I generally look forward to the whole day at races.”

How do you relax after a tough training session or after intense races?

“After training, I usually relax with my girlfriend. First a bit on the couch with a power nap and then in the late afternoon a little more relaxed in the city and have a coffee.”

Can you recommend a good series or movie for our readers?

“My favorite thing to watch is action movies like Iron Man. Or as a series both at home and at the Sons of Anachy races.”

What does your favorite food look like and what are you particularly happy about in the food bag?

"I can't exactly pinpoint my favorite food. I like to eat sushi, pizza and vegan falafel. What I look forward to the most is a nice chilled Coke and a banana in a refreshment bag.”

Who do you think is the greatest professional cyclist of all time? Did you have a role model when you were young?

“For me personally, it's Alejandro Valverde because I've been in a team with him for 6 years and just like his relaxed nature. How relaxed and always in a good mood he is throughout the day. This looseness that he brings with him is fascinating. I had several role models: when I was younger they were Fabian Cancellara and Jan Ullrich.”

Why is cycling the hottest sport in the world?

"Cycling is the coolest sport ever because it's on the street and you don't compete against the others. The only opponent you have in cycling is yourself. And anything can happen. You never know 100% what's coming up."

Do you like to watch bike races yourself? Do you remember the first race you saw?

“I don't really like watching races myself, because then I'd really like to drive myself. Most of the time I only switch on briefly for the last 10-20 kilometers. I don't remember my first race exactly, but I think it was the Tour de France."

What do you think was the best race of all time?

"The best race for me was the Tour of Flanders in 2010, when Fabian Cancellara left Tom Boonen at the Muur in Geraardsbergen like a bucket and won solo."

What's your next big goal?

“My goal is simply to win races – no matter where, no matter when. Preferably a great classic like the Tour of Flanders or Paris – Roubaix.”

What tips can you pass on to young up-and-coming drivers?

“Always staying on the ball and not losing motivation. Don't let your head hang when you lose, because you can only win if you can lose!"
